Each player's on-screen notices (progress popups, completion banner, sound) are saved in config/foreverpathways-client.toml.
The whole tree is one file, data/foreverpathways/tree.json, and it is loaded as datapack data. To change it for your world or server, without touching the mod's jar, put your own copy at the same path in a datapack or in KubeJS:
- a datapack:
datapacks/<your pack>/data/foreverpathways/tree.jsonin the world folder; - KubeJS:
kubejs/data/foreverpathways/tree.json.
Your copy replaces the mod's own. The server sends the tree it uses to every player, so clients need nothing extra. /reload picks up a change; restart the world afterwards for the item locks to follow, because ProgressiveStages reads its stage files as the world starts. /pathways debug shows where the tree in use came from.
A broken file is logged and ignored, and the tree that was in use is kept.
Each world has a difficulty preset: Easy, Normal or Hard. It sets how many shards a player starts with, whether dying costs task progress, and what every node costs.
| Difficulty | Starting shards | Progress lost on death | Node costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 5 | None | 25% cheaper |
| Normal | 3 | A quarter | 5% cheaper |
| Hard | 2 | A quarter | Full cost |
The first time a world starts, it picks its own preset from the world's difficulty and keeps it in its save:
- Peaceful and Easy pick Easy.
- Normal picks Normal.
- Hard and Hardcore pick Hard.
Every world keeps its own: a new Hard world is Hard even if your last world was Easy.
To change a world's preset, an operator runs /pathways difficulty easy, normal or hard. /pathways difficulty on its own shows the preset in force.
To pin one preset for every world, for example on a server, set force_preset in config/foreverpathways-server.toml to EASY, NORMAL or HARD. Leave it on AUTO to let each world keep its own. The server decides and tells every player who joins, so everyone on a server always plays the same difficulty.
Starting shards are handed out when a player first joins, so changing the preset later does not change them for players who already have theirs. Costs and death penalties follow the new preset straight away. The Grimoire's node pages show Hard costs.
