Earning Focal Shards

There are four sources:

Tasks

Most nodes carry a one-off task: smelt 48 copper ingots, walk 6,000 blocks, kill 20 skeletons, breed 150 animals. A task only starts counting once its node is reachable. Finishing it pays its shards ONCE and lets you buy the node.

Bounties

Each player holds 3 personal bounties at a time: small timed jobs that pay a few shards. The third is always a delivery. Finish one and a new one arrives 3 minutes later, or at dawn if that is sooner. Once a day you can hold right-click on a bounty in the Tasks tab to give it up; a new one arrives straight away.

Bounties grow harder as you unlock more of the tree. Most pay 1 to 4 shards; the rare tier VI bounties pay 5. Finish three bounties in one in-game day, deliveries included, and you get 3 more shards, once a day.

Deliveries

The third bounty is always a delivery: hand in a number of one item you can craft, such as 32 Iron Ingots or 2 Bookshelves. Carry the full amount and press Deliver on the bounty; it takes all of it at once. Only plain items count, not damaged, renamed or enchanted ones. Wooden things take any wood: a delivery of 32 Wooden Trapdoors counts oak, spruce, jungle or any mixture of them. Wood blocks (the six-sided bark blocks) are never asked for. Once you deliver it, or it runs out, that slot stays empty until dawn. Give it up and a new delivery arrives straight away.

The item is always one you can make with what you have unlocked, and the amount follows what it costs to make, with rare materials such as diamonds, ender pearls and ancient debris counted as worth more. A delivery never asks for more than 32. Common things, which cost little to make, ask for either 16 (1 shard) or 32 (2 shards). Rarer things ask for fewer, and higher tiers ask for rarer things:

Tier Example Shards
Common, any tier 16 or 32 Planks, Stone Bricks or Iron Ingots 1 for 16, 2 for 32
I 11 Bread 1
II 3 Iron Pickaxes, 28 Lanterns 2
III 6 Compasses 2
IV 2 Bookshelves, 7 Hoppers, 1 Diamond Pickaxe 3
V 11 Eyes of Ender, 1 Netherite Ingot 4
VI (rare) 1 Netherite Pickaxe 5

Staying alive

Every full Minecraft day (20 minutes) you live without dying pays 1 Focal Shard, and every seventh day in a row pays 2 more. Dying starts the count again.

Sharing and giving

Within 30 blocks of another player who owns a node you have not unlocked, that node gets easier: its task asks for a quarter less and it costs a fifth fewer shards, rounded down. Seals count too. A shared node glows green on the ring while they are near.

You can also hand shards to a player within 30 blocks: press the shard button beside your count on the ring, choose them and an amount, and confirm. Gifts cannot be undone.

Discoveries

A handful of vanilla advancements pay a one-off reward.

While you play, a small popup shows each step of progress on a task or bounty, and a banner and a sound announce a completion. Each player can switch these off at the bottom of the Tasks tab.
