What Is Locked

Nahimi edited this page Oct 28, 2026 · 4 revisions

Almost every item is locked behind a node. This page says exactly what a lock does, and what it leaves alone.

What a lock stops

  • A locked item cannot be used, placed, eaten, swung or worn. You can still carry it.
  • A locked machine (a furnace, a chest, a workstation, anything with a block entity) will not open, place or break.
  • Locked items cannot be crafted.
  • IMPORTANT: Bosses cannot be hurt until the node that asks for them is reachable.

What a lock leaves alone

  • Ordinary blocks (dirt, stone, wood, glass and so on) break and place freely as part of the core node.
  • Everyday things lock only their recipe. Anyone can place, use, pick up and break them, whatever they own; the node only buys the recipe. That covers beds, doors, trapdoors, fence gates, buttons, pressure plates, levers, bells, ladders, signs, stoves, the furnace and smoker, campfires, the crafting table, chests and barrels, torches and lanterns, flower pots, item frames, paintings, armour stands, composters and cauldrons, from every mod. A server can change the list in craftOnlyItems in tree.json.
  • Decoration and furniture lock only the recipe! Anyone can place, use and break what a decoration node holds; the node only buys the recipe. So a locked chair can still be used by someone without the node for that chair.
  • Nodes are never taken away. Dying NEVER regresses or removes unlocked nodes.

In a node's Unlocks list on the ring, recipe-only items have a gold frame and corner tab, and items the node only lets you use (crafting them is unlocked elsewhere) have a blue one. Hover over either to see which it is.

Mods the tree does not know

If you run a mod this tree does not know, its items fall under the Curiosities node in the middle of the tree rather than staying locked forever.
