Release list
v0.3.6
Added
- New
routingModesetting, also at the top of the settings screen:QUALITY(default),BALANCEDorLIGHT.BALANCEDuses much less CPU while walking with nearly the same routes, andLIGHTuses the least, on a single core, at the cost of a few more small detours. - Coordinates posted in chat (like
90 64 -120) can be clicked to set the destination. Shift+click can be set to add a stop instead. - Going between the Overworld and the Nether no longer clears the destination: it carries over to the other side's coordinates, and returning restores the exact original.
Improved
- The first route to a far destination appears sooner.
- Long Nether routes take fewer detours: XaeroNav no longer mistakes a cliff on the map for an easy way up when choosing which way to go.
v0.3.5
Added
- Routes by minecart. XaeroNav remembers the rails you have seen in each world and dimension, and when you carry a minecart or one is already sitting on the rails, routes can ride them, even to rails outside your render distance. The HUD tells you where to get on and when to get off.
- Routes on mounts. While riding a horse, donkey, mule, skeleton horse, zombie horse or camel, the route stays on paths your mount can walk and jump, keeps out of water, and tells you where to jump. If the way on needs you to get off, the HUD says where.
- While riding a happy ghast, you get the same flying guidance as with an elytra. While riding a nautilus, routes follow the water.
- A boat-shaped outline marks where to place your boat.
- Stops on the way. Right-click the map or a waypoint to add places to visit before your destination (up to 10), either slotted in where they add the least detour or added to the end. The route on the map and in the world carries on through every stop to the destination.
Fixed
- Pointing at a forest or a huge mushroom on the map no longer makes you climb the tree: the destination is the ground at its foot.
- Long Nether routes take fewer detours around large lava seas. In places Xaero's map has not covered yet, the route can still change course as the map fills in.
- Standing on soul sand and similar blocks no longer makes the route start below the floor, which kept the route line from appearing at your feet and made it recalculate over and over.
v0.3.4
Added
- Minecraft 1.21.3 support, on NeoForge 21.3 or newer, Forge 53.1.2 or newer, and Fabric with Fabric Loader 0.15.11 or newer and Fabric API 0.114.1 or newer.
- Minecraft 1.20.6 support, on NeoForge 20.6 or newer, Forge 50.2.1 or newer, and Fabric with Fabric Loader 0.15.11 or newer and Fabric API 0.100.8 or newer.
- Minecraft 1.20.2 support, on Forge 48 or newer and Fabric with Fabric Loader 0.15.11 or newer and Fabric API 0.91.6 or newer.
- More Minecraft versions on Fabric, using an existing jar: 26.1 and 26.1.1 (the 26.1.2 jar), 1.21.9 (1.21.10), 1.21.6 and 1.21.7 (1.21.8), 1.21 (1.21.1), 1.20.5 (1.20.6) and 1.20.3 (1.20.4). Xaero no longer updates its mods for some of these, so use the versions listed in the installation instructions. On 1.21 and 1.20.3, use World Map 1.41.2 with Minimap 25.3.2 if you want both.
- New
strictLimitssetting (off by default, also in the settings screen): keeps the limits on bridge length, time underwater, fall damage, risky jumps and blocks carried even when no route fits them, and tells you on the HUD that no way exists within them.
Improved
- While gliding under open sky in the Overworld or the End, a pale yellow beam marks where to land, with a direction arrow and the distance on the HUD. For an underground destination, it marks where to land before you continue on foot.
- Gliding routes under a roof and in the Nether are found faster and take fewer unnecessary detours.
- Walking routes keep a block away from lava, the void and deadly drops when a way nearby allows it.
- Gliding routes are shorter by default. If you already have a config file, your current value is kept; set
flightHeuristicWeightto1.5to get the new default.
Fixed
- Routes no longer send you back and forth between the two sides of an unfinished bridge.
- The sky-blue gliding route now starts from the closest point on the route instead of from where you are.
- The HUD no longer says guidance continues when the route ends at a known dead end.
- Clearing navigation, arriving, or taking off now stops the previous route search instead of leaving it running in the background.
- On Forge versions too old for XaeroNav, the game now shows the version it needs instead of crashing at startup: Forge 49.1.10 on 1.20.4, 52.1.2 on 1.21.1, 54.1.5 on 1.21.4 and 55.0.24 on 1.21.5.

Improved
- The map of the area around you that XaeroNav builds for routing uses about 40% less memory (at most about 270 MB instead of about 460 MB) and updates faster. Routes are unchanged.
- Walking lines on flat ground are drawn as straight lines instead of grid-shaped zigzags, so following them is shorter.
- When a shorter way is found as you get close to the destination on a long trip, the route now switches to it more readily.
Fixed
- Starting deep underground no longer sends you on a long detour at depth before climbing up; the route now uses a nearby way up when there is one.
- Underwater, the route no longer has you dig through blocks as if you were on land; digging there is much slower, so it now prefers swimming around or surfacing first.
- Heading to a far destination from a place your world map has not recorded yet (such as a cave right after teleporting) no longer leaves the route stuck, going back and forth, or being thrown away; it now heads toward the destination.
- In the End, routes to a far destination no longer stop at the edge of an island when the next island is beyond the loaded area; the route now builds the bridge toward it.
- Near some destinations that are hard to reach, the route no longer keeps flipping between two directions and sending you back and forth along the same stretch.
- Destinations deep underground close by, such as a cave below the seabed or below a mountain, are now reached instead of the route turning back and forth near them.
v0.3.2
Improved
- The map of the area around you that XaeroNav builds for routing uses about a quarter less memory (at most about 460 MB instead of about 610 MB). Routes are unchanged.
- In the Overworld, routing uses much less memory and updates the route faster, especially near oceans and cave-filled areas.
- When you carry a boat, routes no longer tell you to take the boat across ponds and rivers where swimming is quicker once placing, breaking and picking up the boat is counted.
Fixed
- Long routes in the End no longer turn back toward where you came from each time you reach the tip of an island, and no longer get stuck showing no route at all. Routes now bridge across to the next island toward the destination, including bridges that turn a corner, pass under a small floating island, or cross high above another island.
- In the End, a route can now start from a bridge you built yourself or from the edge of a small island.
- Placing a block a little early where the route shows a placement (for example, before stepping up to where the route climbs by placing a block under your feet) no longer sends you on a detour. The route now climbs onto the block you placed.
- In the Nether, routes no longer build a long bridge along an invisible edge of the search area when a short walk around would be quicker. Some routes were up to about 25% slower than the best route before this fix.
- Routes no longer keep a leftover V-shaped detour after heading toward a dead end and turning back.
v0.3.1
Added
- Minecraft 1.21.11 support, on NeoForge 21.11.45 or newer, on Forge 61.2.1 or newer, and on Fabric with Fabric API 0.141.6 or newer.
- Minecraft 1.16.5 support, on Forge 36.2.39 or newer and on Fabric with Fabric API 0.42.0 or newer. It runs on Java 8, like the game itself.
Improved
- Routes notice a detour sooner and switch to the shorter way, especially in the Nether. The area XaeroNav maps around you for routing now reaches 224 blocks instead of 160, as long as Java has at least 2.5 GB of memory (see Changed).
- The first route after you pick a destination appears sooner, and the map of the area around you is rebuilt faster as you walk.
- Less stutter while following long routes and while flying with an elytra. Planning the long-distance part of a route no longer runs on the game's main thread.
- The boxes marking blocks to dig or place no longer show through walls, so a long row of them no longer blocks your view.
- The time left shown at the top of the screen now counts down to the destination even while only part of the route is known. Past the end of the solid route it adds an estimate, which is corrected as you walk and turns into the exact time once the whole route is found. An estimate is also shown before the first route appears.
- The game log (
latest.log) is much quieter while navigating. Detailed routing diagnostics are now written at debug level; Forge and NeoForge save them todebug.log, which is useful to attach to a routing report.
Fixed
- In the Nether, the route line could suddenly shrink or disappear while you were following it.
- A route that crosses bridges you are about to place could be thrown away and replaced with a much shorter one.
- A branch that ran into a dead end and came back alongside itself could stay on the route for over a minute.
- Guidance could stall for 10 seconds or more in the Nether while a slower fallback search ran.
- Digging a block the route told you to dig could make the whole route recalculate, often switching direction or ending just ahead of you.
- Lava flowing into a spot you had already dug was not noticed, so the route could lead you into it.
- A destination set on a part of the map that was not loaded yet could end up inside a block, which made routing toward it much worse. It is now moved to a spot you can stand on once that area loads, without clearing the route you are following.
- The route line inside water could not be seen from outside it, so a route that swims up a narrow water column looked like it ran straight into the water. Nearby underwater route segments now show through the water surface.
- If building the map of the area around you failed (for example, when memory ran short), it was retried every tick. It now waits 30 seconds and keeps guiding you in the meantime.
Changed
- XaeroNav needs a Java heap of at least 2 GB, the official launcher's default. Below 2.5 GB it maps a smaller area around you (160 blocks) to leave room for the game.
v0.3.0
Improved
- Routing is now built on a navigation graph of the area around you. Routes appear in places where none could be found before, and take noticeably fewer detours — in the Overworld, the Nether and the End.
- Pathfinding itself is about 2.6–2.9× faster, and uses about a quarter of the memory it used to.
- Routes are reviewed as the map fills in, so a route planned from a partly loaded map gets straightened out while you walk.
- The HUD now tells you what to do next — mine, place a block, jump, climb — instead of only where to turn.
- Dangerous stretches are drawn as a dashed line as well as coloured, so they can be told apart without relying on colour.
Fixed
- In the Nether, the route could send you around in circles, walking back and forth instead of heading for the destination.
- In the Nether, the route could suddenly switch to a long detour partway through a journey.
- The route could lead you away from your destination — you would follow it and end up further away than you started. Guidance that would take you well past your closest approach is no longer used.
- Routes across wide lava seas could fail to appear, or head into the lava instead of around it.
- A route that already reached the destination could be thrown away and recomputed when a short reconnection was all that was needed.
- Routes could fail to appear on the outer End islands.
- The route line did not extend from under your feet right after
/xaeronav goto. - The route could recalculate over and over at the same spot.
- Moves that are not actually possible are no longer used: jumping while holding a vine or ladder, placing a bridge while holding one, and jumping out of a cobweb. Falling costs after grabbing a vine now match real falling speed.
- The HUD kept showing warnings (danger, boat, block placement) for parts of the route you had already passed.
- The HUD showed "arriving soon" and the remaining distance for intermediate waypoints instead of only the final destination.
- A corrupted config file is now recovered instead of failing, and custom values are no longer lost when toggling settings.
Known issues
- Routing is still slow in the Nether. The first route can take several seconds to appear, and the mod keeps recomputing while you walk. This is being worked on.
- In difficult terrain, such as the far side of a large lava sea, no route may appear at all rather than a route that leads you the wrong way.
v0.2.0

Map integration is optional: Xaero's World Map 1.44.2+ / Minimap 26.4.2+ on 1.21.1,
World Map 1.46.0+ / Minimap 26.5.0+ on 1.20.1.
Added
- Minecraft 1.20.1 support for Fabric and Forge, alongside the existing 1.21.1 builds.
- Forge 1.21.1 support (previously NeoForge and Fabric only).
- Much better routing in dimensions with a ceiling, such as the Nether — routes that
previously stopped short or never appeared should now be found.
Fixed
- Routes failing to appear when crossing wide lava seas in the Nether.
- Stale routes not updating while walking after being computed from a partially loaded map.
- Overlapping or detouring paths where route segments are stitched together.
- Routes taking unnecessary detours due to underestimated costs.
- Lava-only floors showing on the map where a walkable path actually existed.
- The waypoint marker (dashed line) not disappearing or jumping backward after being passed.
- No route being found at lava shorelines in some cases.
- Routes recalculating repeatedly for several seconds right after using
/xaeronav goto. - The HUD showing "arriving soon" / distance-remaining for intermediate waypoints instead
of only the final destination. - Route drawing on Xaero's World Map and Minimap, and the "Route here" right-click entries, not
working on Forge (XaeroNav's Xaero integration was never registered with Mixin). - A crash-like MOD loading screen on Forge caused by a missing
pack.mcmeta. - Forge builds where MOD events never fired.
Full Changelog: v0.1.3...v0.2.0
v0.1.3
Routing quality release. Minecraft 1.21.1, on either loader.
| Loader | Jar |
|---|---|
| NeoForge 21.1.228+ | xaeronav-0.1.3-neoforge-1.21.1.jar |
| Fabric Loader 0.15.11+ and Fabric API | xaeronav-0.1.3-fabric-1.21.1.jar |
The jar file names changed in this release (xaeronav-<version>-<loader>-<mc>.jar). Nothing else about
installing changed — still client-only, still nothing to put on the server.
Routes you can actually follow
- Swimming is now part of the normal route instead of a separate underwater mode, so crossing water
no longer re-plans the path on every stroke. The line is drawn below the surface, out of your eyeline. - You can now surface diagonally instead of having to swim to a wall and go straight up.
- Routes stop taking pointless detours: no more right-angle zigzags on open ground, no dropping one or
two blocks and climbing straight back, no climbing back up a cliff you just came down, and rejoining
the route no longer sends you back over ground you already walked.
Digging and bridging
- Walking across ordinary ground no longer suggests digging or placing blocks.
- Routes that dig through terrain are no longer rejected by the path check and retried forever.
- The orange outline on a block clears as soon as you finish breaking it.
- Chunks that simply are not loaded yet are no longer counted as "the terrain vanished".
Fixes
- No longer crashes when trimming a goal on a setup without Xaero's World Map.
- Shallow water is no longer priced as if it were deep.
- Unreachable goals are given up on instead of being aimed at forever.
- Parallel searches no longer share one chunk view and corrupt each other's results.
Feedback wanted
Routing is still the part worth stress-testing. If a route detours, stops short, never appears, or sends
you somewhere you cannot follow, run /xaeronav debug probe <x> <y> <z> where it happens and
open an issue with that output.
v0.1.2
First public release. Minecraft 1.21.1, on either loader.
| Loader | Jar |
|---|---|
| NeoForge 21.1.228+ | xaeronav-neoforge-1.21.1-0.1.2.jar |
| Fabric Loader 0.15.11+ and Fabric API | xaeronav-fabric-1.21.1-0.1.2.jar |
Client-only — nothing to install on the server. Xaero's World Map 1.44.2+ and Xaero's Minimap
26.4.2+ are optional: with them the route is drawn on the maps and you get a "Route here"
right-click entry. Without them, the in-world route and the HUD still work.
XaeroNav finds a route you can actually walk — A* over the real terrain, covering walking,
climbing, swimming, boats, ladders, 1–3 block gap jumps, digging, and bridging gaps with the
blocks you are carrying. Long distances are solved in three stages, using Xaero's map data for
the part beyond your loaded chunks. Start gliding and it switches to a 3D aerial route.
See the README for setup and settings.
