Geckium Public Beta 1 Final(?) Community Hotfix

official Geckium release artwork

Welcome to the 2nd community hotfix of the final build of Geckium Public Beta 1, brought to you by several people. This will hopefully be the final build of the pre-mpl2 era, so I added a little more to make it a sweet send-off.

Making these recent releases has been more annoying than anything else - the old codebase was all well and good when it was new, but with bruni gone, many decisions made during the development of this original codebase coming to since bite me back REAL HARD, and the mess that has in retrospect been tacking on compatibility adjustments for newer releases of the Mozilla made browser, it's become an unfun hackfest to update and would likely be a pain in the rear to clean up come the death of 115 ESR in March. This codebase needs to go.

Starting now, unless absolutely necessary due to notable breakages in later releases, the pre-mpl2 codebase is now dead - no more work will be poured into it otherwise, and instead work will begin fully on Beta 2 which will take that codebase, give it heavy restructuring, remove all code for 116 - 152 as 140 ESR will not be around to see Beta 2 release, move 115 code to the bottom in a new 'remove when 115 eols' section for future me's sanity and repeat that behaviour onwards as the upstream progresses and changes, remove various pieces and add new pieces around the place to make Geckium the best it has ever been.

Watch this space. It will be worth it.

A few notes

  • 140 ESR will reach end of life with the release of 158, which happens to be the upcoming release. If you're still using 140, update to 153, or let the browser update to 153 by itself. Beta 2 will never support 140 due to this.
  • This update does not address #593 - this is a problem that has been present since Geckium's debut, originally as a race condition so rare I could only reproduce it once by sheer luck by the time @angelbruni was already long gone from active participation. Given the rarity, I decided to put it on the backburner to think about in Beta 2.0 or 2.1 instead - as you know, however, that rare bug was promoted by upstream to being 100% likely, and it is unfortunately a really deep problem with the way pre-mpl2 Geckium was designed, meaning to resolve it I'd need to take the code apart and, just... I'm going to anyways with Beta 2... capiche? Sorry for the inconvenience. Seriously.

Updating Geckium?

To update Geckium, simply delete your Firefox Profile's chrome folder (use about:support to find your Firefox Profile per the instructions on Geckium's README), and then copy the below Public Beta 1.0 ZIP file's Profile Folder -> chrome folder in its place, before finally closing and opening Firefox. Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Geckium is in an Early Beta stage

Non-English-speaking Geckium users may find parts of Geckium's user interface are written in [!!! ƥƨèúδôℓôçáℓè !!!] - this means there hasn't yet been a translation for that string in your language - if you see any, please fork the repository, translate the dtd/properties files in locale accordingly, then send a Pull Request to this repository containing the localised strings!

Aside from having incomplete localisation for non-English Geckium users, please remember that due to Geckium being in an Early Beta state, there are many things missing from Geckium currently, including:

  • Material Design 1 (or 58, is incomplete and seriously buggy)
  • Floating Bookmarks Bar has a buggy background that is either incorrect or is misaligned with the new tab background
  • Misc. Downloads Shelf behaviour such as dragging a download
  • Error Pages, such as phishing
  • Styling for the Downloads page
  • Geckium and Firefox Updates from the About dialog/page (Geckium's current update checker is a placeholder until a better, automated, update experience is implemented in the future)
  • Preventing the Downloads popup from appearing when downloading a file

These are all planned to be added in future Beta releases.

Welcome to the community hotfix of the final build of Geckium Public Beta 1, brought to you by @jzadl. Beyond this build will be minor bugfixes, and Public Beta 2.

Next, Public Beta 2.

The following was written before the discovery mentioned above.

At this point, I've come to accept 2 things:

The following was written before the discovery mentioned above.

  • Bruni is likely not coming back any time soon to fill the MPL-2.0 Relicense's holes
  • Geckium as-is is gonna need a ton of changes for Nova support

Therefore, I've made the executive decision to rewrite Geckium for Public Beta 2. This shouldn't take too long, given a fair bit of existing code, resources, etc. is there, but expect fairly radical changes to occur sporadically across Geckium in the upcoming next public beta.

Geckium Public Beta 1.19.3 - A final hurrah for pre-relicense

@dominichayesferen dominichayesferen released this 01 Aug 01:30

official Geckium release artwork

Welcome to the final build of Geckium Public Beta 1. Beyond this build will be minor bugfixes, and Public Beta 2.

This release does not support Firefox 154 and above.

Due to changes made in Firefox Nightly, to genuinely improve the browser's security, Geckium will not support Firefox 154 and will be extremely broken to the point of being effectively bricked (every Geckium-exclusive page, including the new tab pages, will break) as bruni and somewhat I coded the pages with a lot of inline scripting in mind (inline scripting will be banned by the changes). I checked and it doesn't seem like I can lift this restriction, so I have made the choice to add a warning banner for the time being.

This will be fixed in the next release, Beta 2, as hefty rewrite work will be necessary to meet the new security requirements.

Edit 28/7/2026: Nightly just promoted the Nova redesign to default status, so regardless there was about to be a temporary support cut-off for Nightly and Developer Edition, lol.

Next, Public Beta 2.

Geckium Public Beta 1.17.7 - Farewell, Firefox 115...?

@dominichayesferen dominichayesferen released this 07 Mar 14:07

official Geckium release artwork

Welcome to the seventeenth hotfix build of Geckium Public Beta 1

A note for Firefox 115 users

As of yesterday, I am proud to finally announce the true open sourcing of Geckium's main branch using MPL-2.0 licensing - because of this, however, the main branch is now a broken mess that needs a lot of work by @angelbruni to salvage and reform into a better Geckium than ever before.

As a result, this release is based on the archive/pre-mpl2 branch instead, and is planned to be the FINAL release that uses that branch depending on time and upstream breaking things. That being said, Firefox 115 is going to reach its end of life on the 24th - crazy I know after all this time - and given the expected time it will take for Geckium's main branch to be ready to power the next big, better than ever, Geckium release, that release will happen after the death of Firefox 115 ESR.

Therefore, I would like to take this moment to celebrate Firefox 115 one last time before Geckium finally moves on from supporting it: Firefox 115 has been through it all, Geckium's spiritual predecessor's beginnings and ultimately fall, Geckium's humble beginnings, entire development up to this point, and rise to prominence that it has successfully, all because of you people, reached, and so much more. As the final bastion for official Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and visual styles support as a whole by Mozilla, and where everything started, I hope this new functionality can at least close some loose ends off for Geckium and provide a sweet end note for Geckium on an important piece of its history and an important Mozilla Firefox release all around.

🫡, Firefox 115, your work here is nearly finally done, and you'll be missed.

For users of Geckium still using Firefox 115, you really should install this version of Geckium ASAP - once a future release occurs with the new MPL-2.0 codebase, users of this version of Geckium onwards on 115 will never have to worry about installing an incompatible Geckium version as Geckium will, once that happens, disable detection of further updates until your browser is next updated.

What a ride it has been, Firefox 115 - 2023 - 2026.

Update: 115 has been extended to September 15th 2026, thus may very likely be supported by MPL-2.0 licensed Geckium releases.

Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Changes since Beta 1.17.5

  • Graphite is now automatically triggered based on whether or not your accent colour is within reasonable range of the various shades Graphite has used since its debut in Mac OS X 10.0, in 9fcbf74
  • All Mac titlebar styles now simultaneously show hovered states on all 3 titlebar buttons whenever at least one of them is currently hovered because 1ee5190
  • Geckium will now recommend you a version of itself compatible with your browser if the current version is too new for your browser, will query an EoL tracker on this repository whenever a new update is first detected to ensure the newly detected update is compatible with your browser, and if during that it finds your browser is unsupported BUT you aren't using the final Geckium version that's compatible it will redirect the new release link to that final compatible version instead of the latest Geckium version possible as of 264251a 3df0b3f
  • fx-autoconfig has been updated, which might also fix #528 (77b5645)

Welcome to the seventeenth hotfix build of Geckium Public Beta 1

Warning

Floorp 11 support ended in Geckium Public Beta 1.17.4, as it has reached end of life. Continued usage of Geckium on Floorp 11 may result in serious bugs happening - if you are still using Geckium on Floorp 11, you should go and update Floorp 11 to Floorp 12.

Important change for new Geckium users

As of Geckium Beta 1.16, Geckium will now automatically customise your toolbar to better fit the intended look and feel you clearly set out to get when you installed Geckium to your Gecko-powered browser of choice. This will only affect users who first use Geckium in this release and onwards, as existing Geckium users will not have their toolbars altered whatsoever as a result of installing this version of Geckium. Below is what you can expect your toolbar to now look like when using Geckium for the first time:

Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Changes since Beta 1.16

  • Fixed Light Theme not being detected in Firefox 138 due to Mozilla changing a part of its palette that is checked for 40f7210
  • Finally fixed the titlebar button and text colour (especially noticeable with the Windows 10 titlebar and interface style) in modern Firefox releases past 128 after it was broken for a fair number of Mozilla Firefox releases 69940b3
  • On that note, active tab text colour also now has a fix slapped onto it for the same circumstances as the above fixed issue 69940b3
  • Fixed Firefox Nightly not rendering menu items due to an exception caused by the removal of .menu-icon-text and .menu-icon-highlightable-text in Nightly releases b63486f
  • Partially fixed the broken mess that is Firefox Nightly's menus on all platforms ef631ff
  • The "Finish Setup" nag is now ignored by the initial toolbar re-arrangement feature - prior to .1, it would be considered a custom toolbar item and thus moved accordingly from the Bookmarks Toolbar to the custom toolbar icons 18f97e7
  • Fixed the breakage of titlebar button glyphs, caused exclusively by Firefox for Windows, in Firefox 141+ 697ea3d
  • Fixed the address bar background by duplicating all references to it to now also use its new class-instead-of-ID-based identifier 00d8228
  • Added a hack to fix the majority of the issues Mozilla caused to pinned tabs (they are now their own separate container entirely), although there is now still a clipping issue remaining, in d2ea386
  • Added a warning if you try to launch a Website Application (new platform-specific feature) while Gecked - Mozilla decided they'd also be themed and JS-modded too, but Geckium hasn't been prepared for that hence the warning - 09b2a13
  • Tab scrolling fans, rejoice! Tab scrolling is now 99% fixed bugs wise by the fixes in 874d712
  • Tahoe's window rounding is now used, although if I used the right API calls Big Slur's and Mavericks/Yosemite/Catalina's window border radii should now instead be used on those respective Macintosh System versions f68ab9b 1b59357 940d7c4
  • The new tab page should no longer spontaneously combust if you are signed into a Firefox Account that DARE not have a display name set on it 6eb32f9
  • Swapped bruni's past check, to fix infobar hitbox obscuring, to instead be an opacity check meaning that from now on the apparent size and movements of the infobar when it's closed should no longer obscure your toolbars starting bd61f26
  • Switched Firefox version detection to Services.appinfo.version in 0f62a6b - if this change breaks Geckium, it will be reverted.
  • Removed end of life code for Floorp, and added new code to better support Floorp 12 in 8afead0
  • Fixed Firefox 146 re-revealing the Firefox Account button in 4c6c889
  • Fixed detection of LWThemes in Firefox 146 as they have made significant breaking changes to how lwthemes work in this release, such as making Light and Dark cease to be treated as being LWThemes, in 0266b2b
  • Somewhat fixed the custom search engine switcher toolbarbutton functionality in 5f15f45

Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Changes since Beta 1.15

  • @angelbruni added a dark empty thumbnail background to Chromium 3's new tab page in d9c2760, f133505
  • That Chinese fork of Firefox with no name for Windows 7 will now look normal again, instead of having Firefox's former arbitrary fog, as @dominichayesferen has force-shown the Geckium toolbar-border that it was replacing in 359a5a0
  • If you did a fuckie wucky while installing Geckium, Geckium will now make sure you know what you did as well as how to fix your installation of Geckium (assuming said mistake was downloading the wrong copy of Geckium) (@dominichayesferen in f4c81b4 and 22daf96)
  • As mentioned in the above headers, @dominichayesferen finally added automatic toolbar layout re-arranging for new Geckium users - this took until now to be implemented as he did not want the solution to destroy toolbar items the user placed on their toolbar prior to them installing Geckium, so time was needed to look into a suitable way of approaching this conundrum - in cd1d08d
  • Added Marble's Proton theme option to the Geckium ForkAdjustments Clashing Settings Blacklist (in fda2d95 and 5d83d0b)
  • @dominichayesferen decided to go fix the titlebar in Linux being transparent, in c89ab59
  • Finally, the "you have no JS patch" error banner is now styled... again. (@dominichayesferen, 2c8958f)

.1

  • @dominichayesferen fixed the hacky workaround for detecting if Light and Dark Firefox Themes are recoloured by extensions falsely detecting Marble's modified Light and Dark Firefox Themes as being recoloured by extensions in 2f11ea3 (note: this means Geckium can now support ANY fork's differing browser palettes as long as they report themselves as being a uniquely named fork of Firefox - it just needs adding to the code)
  • @dominichayesferen removed Silverfox's migrator's automatic restart as due to 1.16.0's new toolbar preconfiguration feature the toolbar layout no longer needs overwriting by the Silverfox migration code - instead, Pocket is now removed from the toolbar by the migrator - in 97ca4f2
  • @dominichayesferen fixed Silverfox's applications list breaking in Geckium if Geckium's transitioned to since the rewritten application-list storage was added to Geckium (in 2b59345)
  • Silverfox's Old Look is now Chromium 17 instead of 11 (@dominichayesferen, 2b59345)
  • @ImSwordQueen added her forked browser to the settings restriction code that was added to mitigate issues with Marble's additional appearance options in 0c2ff50

To update Geckium, simply delete your Firefox Profile's chrome folder (use about:support to find your Firefox Profile per the instructions on Geckium's README), and then copy the below Public Beta 1.14 ZIP file's Profile Folder -> chrome folder in its place, before finally closing and opening Firefox. Geckium will handle the rest automatically.

Changes since Beta 1.13

  • Further 'fix' to Firefox's forced spacer by @angelbruni in 1f13212
  • Geckium Never Released by @angelbruni in 334588d
  • Now checks for Firefox 116 (@angelbruni) in 0801aee
  • Removed more fog from Native Controls inclusive Firefox forks powered by Firefox versions since the soon-to-be EOL Mozilla Firefox ESR release (by @angelbruni) in 2bd2928, 5d420cd, b9dc97b and so on
  • The previous release's Firefox 135+ fixes... are now used in Firefox 135 (by @angelbruni) in bf3dac1.
  • Yo better hide yo new mute tab button, by @angelbruni, in cda5039
  • Since Firefox on Windows now forces native borders ALWAYS in Firefox 135+, we have taken the executive decision to make Compact Borders look like it did in Silverfox, Geckium's predecessor, again by the keyboard of @dominichayesferen's computer 060557a
    • This change ONLY affects affected Windows users - everyone else will not see this change at all.

Please report bugs in the Issues tab of this repository.
