Voicebook 0.1.0

The first tagged release of Voicebook — a local-first document reader for people who would rather listen. Everything below shipped since the project's inception; nothing requires an account or a server.

Listening

• On-device speech with Supertonic 3 (ONNX Runtime, WebGPU): ten studio voices, 31 languages, adjustable quality, passage buffering, and local audio caching.
• Premium voices via your own ElevenLabs API key — no download, native word-level timing, economical Flash v2.5 by default.
• Whole-document preparation, MP3 export, pitch-preserving speed from 0.5× to 3×, Media Session controls, offline reopening.

Spoken descriptions

• A language model rewrites what TTS can't read — LaTeX equations, tables, Mermaid diagrams, images, and code blocks — into short spoken prose, generated in the background and cached with the document.
• Runs on-device (LFM2.5 1.2B on your GPU) or with your own key for Claude, GPT, or Gemini — cloud engines can even describe embedded images from the pixels.
• Description styles: Concise, Balanced, Educational, or fully custom prompts; every description is editable and regenerable per construct from an inline panel.
• Deterministic fallbacks (exact equation readings, header-aware table rows, verbatim short text snippets) speak immediately until — or instead of — a model.

Reading

• Precise sentence and word read-along highlighting, including sentences with inline math.
• Links are never read aloud as letter soup.
• Structured PDF import (headings, tables, math) via LiteParse; DOCX, Markdown (GFM + KaTeX + Mermaid), TXT, and pasted text.
• Click any passage to play from it; the timeline shows listened, cached, and generating audio.

Interface

• Ten color themes (light and dark) with a one-click cycler, four reading fonts, document zoom, fullscreen, and a contextual guided tour on every surface.
• A first-run setup that asks the real question — on-device or API key, per engine — and a factory reset that truly erases everything.

Privacy

Documents, audio, settings, and API keys live only in your browser; keys are sent only to their own provider. No account, no analytics, no telemetry.
