🧠 Enhanced Intelligent Discovery

Major Improvements to Subnet Discovery

  • Cross-network subnet discovery - Now probes truly common subnets across different networks (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x) instead of just variations within the current network
  • Gateway-first probing - Tests common gateway IPs (.1, .254, .10, .100, .50) before scanning entire subnets for maximum efficiency
  • Thoroughness-based selection - Different levels probe different numbers of common subnets (Level 1: 2 subnets, Level 5: 21 subnets)
  • Active subnet prioritization - Confirmed active subnets get higher priority (70) than unproven candidates (40)

Technical Enhancements

  • Improved subnet candidates - Focus on industry-standard common networks rather than algorithmic variations
  • Enhanced verbose output - Shows discovered common subnets with their gateway IPs
  • Better resource utilization - Only scans full subnets after confirming gateway activity

Common Subnets Discovered

Based on research of real-world network usage patterns:

  • Home networks: 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.0.0/24, 10.0.0.0/24
  • Corporate networks: 10.10.0.0/24, 10.20.0.0/24, 172.16.0.0/24
  • Alternative configurations: 192.168.2.0/24, 10.1.0.0/24, and more based on thoroughness level

πŸ”§ Breaking Changes

None - this is a backward-compatible enhancement that improves discovery without changing API or output format.

πŸ“Š Performance Impact

  • Faster discovery for networks with responding gateways (only tests 5 IPs before full scan)
  • More targeted scanning reduces unnecessary subnet exploration
  • Better success rate for multi-network environments (corporate, guest networks, IoT VLANs)

Installation

Download the appropriate binary for your platform:

  • Linux (x64): `network-mapper-linux-amd64`
  • Linux (ARM64): `network-mapper-linux-arm64`
  • macOS (Intel): `network-mapper-darwin-amd64`
  • macOS (Apple Silicon): `network-mapper-darwin-arm64`
  • Windows (x64): `network-mapper-windows-amd64.exe`

Make the binary executable and run:
```bash
chmod +x network-mapper-*
./network-mapper-* --help
```

Features

  • 🌐 Cross-platform network discovery (Linux, macOS, Windows)
  • πŸ“‘ Advanced service discovery (mDNS/Bonjour, SSDP/UPnP)
  • 🌐 Enhanced DNS resolution with bulk lookups and caching
  • 🏭 MAC vendor identification using IEEE OUI database
  • πŸ’Ύ DHCP lease table analysis
  • 🧠 Smart device classification and fingerprinting
  • 🎨 Beautiful CLI visualization with ASCII art

Docker

```bash
docker pull ghcr.io/nickborgers/network-mapper:v2.8.0
docker run --rm --network host ghcr.io/nickborgers/network-mapper:v2.8.0
```

Verification

Verify the download with the provided checksums:
```bash
Download both binary and checksum, then verify
sha256sum -c network-mapper-linux-amd64.sha256
```
