πŸ”„ Health Connect: Stride can now write, not just read

Stride has always read from Health Connect. It can now publish to it, so the
steps, distance and active calories it counts show up in your other health apps
instead of staying locked in Stride.

It is off by default. Settings β†’ Health Connect β†’ Write steps back.
Turning it on asks for write permission separately from read, and backfills
your last 30 days so your history appears rather than only days from then on.

A few decisions worth stating plainly:

  • Calories are written as active, not total. Stride estimates the energy
you burned by moving. Filing that as a total would inflate every other app's
    basal-inclusive number.
  • Re-syncing a day replaces Stride's record for it, never adds a second one.
  • Stride subtracts its own writes when reading. Health Connect sums every
app that writes steps β€” without this, Stride would read back its own totals as
somebody else's and add them again on every sync, and your count would climb
    on its own.
  • Turning it off asks what to do with what you already shared. Leave it for
the apps that are reading it, or remove it. Nothing is deleted silently.

🌿 Verdant β€” a second complete skin

Stride already had Classic and the 8-bit Retro skin. Verdant is a third: an
editorial wellness look β€” warm off-white ground, olive-lime accents, generous
rounded cards, and a dark companion panel.

It is not a recolour. Four screens were rebuilt around it:

Today β€” the progress ring is gone, replaced by a goal curve. The hero splits
into a light stat card beside a dark panel, and every stat carries a sparkline of
its own last seven days.

History β€” now answers the question the screen exists for: how does this
stretch compare to the last one?
It leads with the period total and a Β±% change
chip, keeps the bars inside that same card so the number and its shape read as
one statement, and follows with an explicit side-by-side comparison. Tap any bar
to drill into that day.

Awards β€” built on rings rather than bars, so it never reads as another
History: your streak drawn against your personal best, a Collection meter with
one notch per badge, a ring per challenge, and a badge wall.

Settings β€” section names demoted to quiet eyebrows, every row's icon in an
accent medallion, a status panel at the top, and the theme picker turned into
visual preview tiles β€” each one rendering that skin's actual corner
treatment and accent, so you choose a look by looking at it.

The dock gains a raised centre action that starts a walk.

🎚 Theme style

One picker, three looks: Classic Β· Retro Β· Verdant. Existing Retro users are
migrated across automatically β€” nothing to re-select.

Classic remains free and completely unchanged. Retro and Verdant are premium.

πŸ“ Honest notes

  • Huawei Health is not supported. Huawei watches (GT 2e, GT 3, GT 4, Band)
keep their data in Huawei Health, which needs Huawei's own Health Service Kit.
That SDK requires an enterprise Huawei developer account β€” individual
developers cannot get health scopes at all. The app-side groundwork is done
and docs/HUAWEI_HEALTH.md spells out exactly what remains, but there is
nothing shippable today. If you have a Huawei device and want this, say so on
the issue tracker β€” it helps justify the account.
  • Insights and the Walk screen keep their existing layouts. They pick up
Verdant's colours and card shapes, but have not had a structural redesign.
  • Verdant's plant artwork is bundled with the app.
