Stride v1.0.5 — Ghost Steps
If you are on 1.0.4, please update. This fixes a bug in it, and it is a bug
that can add thousands of steps you never took.
Everything else in 1.0.4 — the step-source control, Health Connect write-back,
the new widget, the start/stop control on the home screen — is unchanged and
carried over. This release changes one thing.
Accurate step filtering was not actually filtering
A user reported walking fifteen minutes to a bus stop, riding the bus to work,
and arriving with around 17,000 steps instead of around 2,000 — with
Accurate step filtering switched on the whole way.
They had done nothing wrong. The setting reported itself as on while doing
nothing at all. Four separate faults, all ours:
It stopped running and never restarted. The activity detector that powers the
filter lives inside the background tracking service, and nothing treated the
filter itself as a reason to run that service. After a reboot, a low-memory kill,
or turning background tracking off, the detector was gone — while the switch
still read as on.
It could only ever filter Stride's own step sensor. If Google Fit, Samsung
Health or your phone's built-in detector logged the same bus ride into Health
Connect, those steps arrived untouched — and when Health Connect wins the day,
that is the number you see. Vibration counted during a ride is now subtracted
from whichever source wins.
Sitting still counted as proof you had got off. A smooth bus or train reports
"still" at high confidence for minutes at a time, which unlatched the filter
mid-journey and let the vibration back in. Only actual movement on foot clears it
now.
Every failure was silent. Play Services missing, the Physical activity
permission refused, the subscription rejected — each one wrote a log line nobody
would ever read and left the switch looking healthy. Settings now tells you when
the filter is not running, and what to do about it.
Stride can tell you about updates again
You are reading this because you came looking. That was the only way to find out.
The in-app update checker was removed ahead of the planned Play Store launch,
which made sense for a Play build and no sense at all for the APK actually being
handed out on GitHub and Gumroad. 1.0.4 shipped without it, so nobody running it
would ever have learned that this release exists.
It's back, under Settings → Updates: check by hand, or automatically daily,
weekly or monthly, with the release notes shown before you download anything.
It's off nothing and costs nothing — set it to Never if you'd rather not.
The eventual Play build deliberately leaves it out, since Play forbids an app
updating itself outside the store and delivers updates itself.
Everything else
No other changes. If you never used accurate step filtering, 1.0.4 and 1.0.5
behave identically for you — apart from finally being able to hear about the
next release.

Accurate step filtering is free, and always has been — it is in
Settings → Tracking, not behind Premium. It uses Google Play Services activity
recognition; with it off, Stride counts entirely on-device.
This APK is built from the closed tree and includes the paid components, so it
won't match the GPLv3 source byte for byte.
