Step-counter fixes, simpler settings and a widget pack

This release fixes how Stride handles phone sensor readings, Health Connect
corrections and vehicle filtering. It also simplifies the step-source settings
and fixes navigation and walk-screen usability.

Five widget choices

The existing Adaptive widget is joined by four new designs:

  • Pocket: a compact dark tile with a mint walking icon, large step count and
    distance underneath.
  • Orbit: a circular goal-progress display with the step count in the centre.
  • Daily: a light card with steps, goal progress, distance and calories.
  • Week: a dark seven-day chart with today highlighted.

Long-press your home screen → Widgets → Stride to add them. Each design is a
separate entry, so you can place several at once and resize them. The widgets use
Stride’s saved counts and distance units; tapping one opens the app. Goal and unit
changes refresh the pack too. The Adaptive widget’s progress-bar rendering is fixed.
The widget pack is free, matching the existing widget’s availability.

A clearer choice of step source

There are now two choices: Health Connect and This phone.

Health Connect is the default. It continues to prefer synced watch/band data
when available; otherwise it uses the external Health Connect total. Stride's
own pedometer runs only after you select This phone. It no longer takes over
silently when Health Connect is unavailable.

The selected source now determines today's total without an older, higher phone
count holding it up. A sync or a source change can legitimately lower the number.
If you choose a particular app in Step sources, Stride follows only that app,
including zero until it has synced steps.

Counter and vehicle-filter fixes

  • Ignore duplicate and out-of-order phone sensor readings instead of letting them
    corrupt the next step difference.
  • Use sensor event timestamps and boot identity when handling delayed readings,
    day boundaries and reboots.
  • Apply vehicle filtering to fresh sensor intervals within a confirmed ride.
Walking clears the ride state immediately; stale evidence expires. A fresh
still report can maintain a confirmed ride, such as when stopped in traffic.
  • Stop applying the phone's vehicle state to Health Connect imports. Steps synced
during a commute may have been walked earlier.
  • Read steps even when optional distance/calorie permissions are declined, and
scan all Health Connect record pages when discovering source apps.
  • Retain the last saved count on Health Connect read errors. Avoid unrestricted
hourly reads when no eligible external source exists.

These changes address counting and source-selection bugs. They do not guarantee
that different devices will measure exactly the same number of steps.

Defaults and a reset button

New installations use Health Connect, vehicle filtering on, and
write steps back off. Existing explicit settings are preserved; old
Automatic source selections migrate to Health Connect.

To apply these defaults to an existing installation, open
Settings → Reset step settings. This also clears a manually selected source
app. History, goals and Premium remain intact, and previously exported Health
Connect records are not deleted.

Vehicle filtering applies only to Stride's phone counter and requires background
tracking and the activity permission. Watch data still needs to sync from the
companion app into Health Connect; pairing over Bluetooth alone is not enough.

UI fixes

  • Removed repeated screen/card entrance animations and temporary theme changes
when switching tabs; tapping the current tab no longer reloads it.
  • Reserved space above the bottom navigation so it does not cover screen content.
  • Made the walk screen scroll as one list, with reachable Start/Stop controls.
  • Added a map overview before a location fix, clearer location status and
permission guidance, and centering when the first fix arrives.
  • Allowed longer achievement names to wrap.

Classic, Retro and Verdant remain. The experimental Trail preview is not part of
this release. Premium billing, licensing and existing feature access are unchanged.

Download and verification

Attach Stride-1.0.8-widget-pack.apk to this release. Install over the
existing direct edition without uninstalling or clearing data.

  • Android 8.0 or newer; package com.vythera.stride.
  • Version 1.0.8-direct, version code 9.
  • Offline release build and release lint checks passed; all 28 unit tests passed.
  • APK signature verified; installed over the existing app on the connected phone.
  • Five widget providers verified; Pocket and Orbit tested together in the launcher.
  • The new layouts were checked at normal/minimum sizes, long/zero counts and 1.3×
text scaling. Debug-only sample screens are absent from this release.
  • SHA-256: CA486AFCFD4F3EC922E3651923EBCD38EAA4B36AF08012BE5998BB13D6FEB0E6.

For feedback, include your selected source, phone/watch model, companion app and
whether its data had synced. Comparing a short walk and a vehicle journey
separately is more useful than comparing all-day totals alone.
