SpoolmanScale v0.8.3

Everything since v0.8.2. Deutsche Fassung weiter unten.

0.8.3 is about doing more right at the scale: create spools that are not in your inventory yet, free a tag for the next spool when you archive the old one, weigh a spool by its id when it has no tag, print labels on more printers, and see the scale inside BamBuddy or FilaMan.

⚠ One USB update first

0.8.3 no longer fits the old memory layout. If you skipped the one-time USB update from 0.8.0, your scale will not install 0.8.3 over the air and shows a QR code to the web flasher instead. Open the web flasher in Chrome or Edge, connect the scale and choose "Update": it installs 0.8.2 with the new layout in about 2 minutes, and WiFi, calibration and backend settings are kept. After that, 0.8.3 arrives over the air as usual.

🧵 New: create filaments and spools on the scale

The most requested feature: a spool that is not in your inventory yet can be created right on the scale, under "New / Copy". "Link" now only joins a tag to a spool you already have, both menus with clear tiles. And you no longer have to look for either: put an unknown spool on, and a card suggests the next step.

  • From a Bambu tag: put the spool on, and the scale creates the filament and the spool from what the tag says (name, colour, material, weight), filling gaps from the filament database. Gradient, dual-colour and clear spools are recognised. A price can be entered too.
  • Any brand, with a blank NTAG: scan an empty tag, then choose maker, material, colour and size. The spool is created and the tag linked to it. Where the filaments come from:
    • Spoolman: SpoolmanDB, which Spoolman serves itself. The first download is about 3 MB. After that, the list of makers and materials stays on the scale for 7 days, so the picker opens at once, even after a restart.
    • FilaMan: the FilamentDB plugin, with an extra step for the product line.
    • BamBuddy with its own inventory: BamBuddy's colour catalogue, with the empty spool as a step of its own. Bambu Lab colours get their article number from the scale's catalogue.
    • BamBuddy with Spoolman behind it: the SpoolmanDB of that Spoolman server, as in Spoolman mode. The filament is created there, the spool goes through BamBuddy. Creating from a Bambu tag takes the same route.
  • The scale asks: a spool the inventory does not know opens a card with the step that most likely comes next. For a Bambu tag it names the matching spools without a tag, one as a row or several as chips, ready to link, or offers to create the spool from the tag when there is none. For any other tag it shows the ways in. "Just weigh" closes the card until the spool is taken off again. The switch "Ask about unknown spools" under More options is on by default. Idea by @DanielNagy.
  • The right weight from the start: a spool created off the pad is weighed against the empty spool the inventory has on file for the filament or the brand. A full spool files its measured weight as its full weight, and what is on the pad is what is left; on Bambu's standard 250 g core the maker's figure stays, the cores vary too much. A reading that cannot be the spool's, with nothing on the pad, no empty weight on file or more than a full spool can weigh, files the maker's weight as full, and the card says so.
  • A second spool of the same filament reuses it instead of creating a duplicate.

Tags of other makers will probably follow (Snapmaker, TigerTag).

🏷️ New: free the tag when a spool is archived

Many of you peel a tag off an empty spool and stick it on the next one, or refill the same spool. Until now the tag stayed linked to the archived spool, and a scan kept finding it. Now, after "Archive", the scale asks "Release the tag?":

  • "Release" unlinks every tag of that spool in your inventory, so the tag is free for a new spool right away.
  • An NTAG lying on the scale is erased in the same step, ready to be written again.
  • A Bambu tag is only unlinked, never erased.
  • "Keep" leaves everything as before.

The question only comes once the archive went through, so a failed archive never unlinks anything.

🔢 New: a spool by its id, without a tag

Not every spool has a tag yet. On an empty main screen the left button now reads "Spool by ID": type the id your inventory shows, and the keypad shows the spool beside it (colour, material, maker, name, what is left) before you load it. From then on it is on screen like a scanned spool, with weight, location, AMS, drying and labels. Two things differ from a tag:

  • Nothing is saved on its own. A typed id is one digit away from another spool, so the weight goes out only when you tap "Update weight". The status line says "Loaded by ID - no tag".
  • It ends on its own: a minute after the spool is lifted again, like a lifted tag, when nothing is put on within two minutes, when a tag turns up and takes over, or with the small x behind the status text. Without a load cell only the x and a tag end it. The same x now also clears a lifted NFC spool before its 60 seconds are up.

🖨️ Label printing, extended

  • More printers: the Phomemo M110S (#55) and the NIIMBOT B1 and M2 are confirmed on real hardware, the M2 at its full 300 dpi on 50 mm rolls. NIIMBOT B21 and B203 use the B1 driver, but nobody has printed on one yet; Phomemo M120, M200 and M221 stay experimental. If you have one of those, please try it and report back, with the log.
  • Choosing a printer: model and roll come from a grid of cards, on the scale and on the printer page in the browser, with recommended and experimental models marked and the rolls drawn to scale. The printer page says how the model prints, direct thermal or thermal transfer, and points to the recommended printers in the manual, on the scale as a QR code.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy only: the printer page, now tidier with your printer as a tile and the scan as a list, says it plainly: printers on Classic Bluetooth, such as Brother P-touch, are out of the scale's reach.
  • The label editor in the browser, on the Labels tab, now covers most of what a spool label needs. The scale prints with the same template.
    • Five arrangements: Standard, Compact, Large QR, Large material and Text only, in landscape or portrait on 40 x 30 and 50 x 30 rolls.
    • More fields, off until you switch them on: empty and net weight, nozzle and bed temperature, drying temperature and time, location, drying date, and a line of your own. Beside each switch the page says when the spool or the backend has nothing for it.
    • A label for the filament as well as the spool, with a code to its page in Spoolman or FilaMan.
    • True to size: the page picks printer and roll itself, and the preview shows the label in real millimetres with the dots the printer gets, 203 or 300 dpi.
    • On the scale, "Print label" now shows the label as it will print, with spool or filament, arrangement, orientation and roll to switch. "Show before printing" on the printer screen turns that off.
  • Labels from FilaMan: the editor can use the presets of FilaMan's label designer, and the scale uses the label renderer set in FilaMan. Presets are rotated to fit the roll in the printer. Needs FilaMan 1.4.3 or newer.
  • Finds your printer in a crowded room: with many Bluetooth devices around, the scale keeps the strongest candidates and goes straight for the printer you saved. By @akira69 (#52).
  • Your date format on the label: besides DD.MM.YYYY and YYYY-MM-DD there is now MM/DD/YYYY, and the label prints the format you chose instead of always DD.MM.YYYY.
  • Print on the PC through FilaMan: with FilaMan and no Bluetooth printer in use (Bluetooth off, or no printer picked), the label button in More Info asks for a spool or filament label and sends it to FilaMan. A FilaMan tab open in a browser on the PC shows it to print from the label designer; the request waits five minutes, with FilaMan 1.5.0 an hour. For printers the scale cannot reach, such as a USB Brother. Needs FilaMan 1.4.3 or newer.
  • The QR code links where your server does: the code on a label leads to the address the server prints on its own labels, Spoolman's Base URL or BamBuddy's External URL. The scale asks for it when a label is printed or previewed and keeps the answer for ten minutes. A server without that setting, and FilaMan, keep the address the scale talks to.

🎨 Themes

  • BamBuddy themes, dark and light, in BamBuddy's own look.
  • Seven colour presets on the Theme page: one tap sets accent and ground tone.

🔖 Spoolman: native tags plus an extra field, not just for OpenSpoolman

With Spoolman's native tags, the "For OpenSpoolman" switch becomes "Also in extra field", and your setting carries over. Besides extra.tag (the Bambu UUID, for OpenSpoolman) it can now keep extra.nfc_id in step: the Bambu UUID, or the chip UID for any other tag, for your own tools that read that field. If you move from the tag field extra.nfc_id to native tags, it starts on extra.nfc_id. Unlinking a tag also takes its UID out of the extra field. Idea by @DanielNagy.

🗓️ BamBuddy

  • Drying date: BamBuddy's daily builds have a field of their own for it since October, and the scale uses it. Dates the scale kept in the spool's note so far move over by themselves; an older BamBuddy keeps using the note.
  • Spoolman 0.27 through BamBuddy: for BamBuddy with Spoolman as its database, we built support for Spoolman 0.27's native tags into BamBuddy itself. It comes with BamBuddy's next official release, and the scale supports it from the start: tags land in Spoolman's own tag list, a spool keeps both chips of a Bambu spool, and a scan finds it by either of them.

🪟 The scale inside BamBuddy or FilaMan

The scale's web interface can now be shown inside your backend: in BamBuddy as a link in its sidebar, in FilaMan with the new SpoolmanScale plugin. It follows the backend's light or dark mode and uses the wider space there. The backend page in the scale's browser interface explains the steps. This does not work with an https backend; the card says why. Idea by @mithkr (#49).

The web interface now asks its questions in a dialog of its own instead of the browser's pop-up. Inside a backend, that dialog, the theme bar and the restart card stay in the part of the page you are looking at.

⚖️ Auto-tare

A new switch under Settings > Spools & scale, off by default: while the pad is empty, a small steady drift of up to 5 g is moved back to zero. It never acts while a tag or spool is on the scale, and a green "A" on the TARE button shows that it is on. By @wolfrage76 (#48).

👜 Bag weight, optional

The bag weight under Settings > Spools & scale now starts at 0 g, which means no bag: the main screen shows two lines instead of four, and the weight popup one button. If you weighed "with bag" without ever opening that screen, enter the 50 g again: the old default is gone with this update. A value you saved yourself is kept.

📸 Screenshots of the display

The Logs page in the browser takes screenshots of the display and saves them as PNG, up to six. Holding two fingers on the display for a second takes one too. Handy for a bug report.

📥 Without a load cell

Assigning a spool to FilaMan's AMS is smoother: a tap or the next spool ends the countdown, and a spool that was never weighed is no longer booked as empty.

🐞 Fixed

  • Waking from deep sleep: a tap on the display wakes every board again. On some boards the touch chip stayed in reset during sleep, and only pulling the power brought the scale back. Found by sticky.
  • Many smaller and larger fixes, among them: the drying traffic light for Bambu spools in per-material mode, the full https address in the status bar, grey instead of greenish popup backgrounds in the Spoolman themes, and the update dot sits on the corner of its button again, now on the firmware row too.

📄 Project

  • SpoolmanScale is now licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later, with the consent of every contributor (#45).
  • A guide for contributors, with templates for issues and pull requests.
  • Easier integration for other backends: a specification with a checker, so further inventories can connect, also online services that don't run on your own network.
  • No server yet? SpoolmanScale Pro turns a Raspberry Pi into one: installed with one command, then set up and kept up to date from a web page.

Known

  • Phomemo M120, M200, M221 and NIIMBOT B21, B203 have not been tried on a real printer yet.
  • From 0.8.2: light themes smear while scrolling, writing a tag holds the screen for 2 to 4 s, FilaMan does not reset the remaining weight on archive.

Thanks to @wolfrage76 for auto-tare and the idea for the AMS countdown, to @mithkr for the idea of embedding the scale, to @akira69 for FilaMan's label API and the Bluetooth fixes, to Vik for confirming the NIIMBOT B1, to dox for the M110S (#55), to @DanielNagy for the extra field and the idea of the card for an unknown spool, to mc-red for asking for the spool by its id, to sticky for tracking down the deep sleep problem, and to everyone who tested and sent logs.

SpoolmanScale 0.8.3 | FormFollowsFunction

SpoolmanScale v0.8.3, deutsch

Alles seit v0.8.2.

Tags weiterer Hersteller folgen wahrscheinlich (Snapmaker, TigerTag).

🏷️ Neu: Tag beim Archivieren freigeben

Ein gescheitertes Archivieren trennt also nie etwas.

SpoolmanScale 0.8.3 | FormFollowsFunction
