FFmpeg Build v1.0.38
FFmpeg Cross-Platform Build v1.0.38
Internal Build for NoMercy MediaServer
Cross-platform FFmpeg 8.1.2 binaries. This release adds a new build target (FreeBSD), a new custom audio filter (keydetect), an npm distribution client, signed release manifests, and several build/CI fixes.
Highlights
🆕 New platform: FreeBSD x86_64
- New
ffmpeg-freebsd-x86_64.dockerfilebuild target, fully integrated into the CI build matrix (plus afreebsd-debug.dockerfilefor local debugging). - Brings the supported platform count to six; the manual real-hardware test checklist now includes FreeBSD.
- CI smoke test uses ELF-header validation for this target (see CI & testing below), since a FreeBSD binary cannot execute on the Linux runners — the real-hardware pass was verified before release.
🎵 New keydetect audio filter
A custom filter (scripts/57-keydetect.sh + af_keydetect.c) that detects the musical key and chord progression of audio:
- HPCP-style chroma extraction with spectral peak picking, harmonic folding, and automatic tuning detection (handles detuned material, verified to ±30 cents).
- Krumhansl-Schmuckler key finding with selectable profiles:
krumhansl,temperley,shaath(default),edma. - 24 major/minor chord templates with score smoothing and minimum-duration segmenting.
- Emits per-frame metadata (
lavfi.keydetect.key,.key_confidence,.chord,.chords) plus a parseable stderr summary at EOF, in the same style asbeatdetect. - Usage:
ffmpeg -i in.mp3 -af keydetect -f null - 2>&1 | grep lavfi.keydetect - Verified against a pristine FFmpeg 8.1.2 tree with a synthesized functional suite: major/minor/sharp-root keys, chord progressions, stereo, detune, added noise, 48 kHz, seventh chords, silence, and all four key profiles.
📦 npm client: @nomercy-entertainment/ffmpeg-static (#34)
- New npm package under
clients/npm/that resolves and downloads the correct prebuilt ffmpeg/ffprobe binary for the host platform. - Exposes
ffmpeg-path/ffprobe-pathbins, TypeScript API, platform detection with tests, and a dedicatednpm-publish.ymlCI workflow. - Groundwork laid for additional ecosystems (see
clients/README-multi-ecosystem.md).
Fixed
beatdetect: FFT stride contract violation
- The
av_tx_fncall passedsizeof(float)as the stride, but thetx.hcontract forAV_TX_FLOAT_FFTrequires the size of one complex sample (sizeof(AVComplexFloat)). - This was a latent spec violation — current c2c FFT codelets ignore the stride, so no behavioral change:
beatdetectstill reports correct BPM (119.80 on a synthesized 120 BPM pulse train). Fixed before a future libavutil could make it bite.
Smoke tests: ELF-header validation instead of cross-executing foreign binaries
- Cross-built binaries (linux-aarch64, freebsd-x86_64) cannot reliably be executed on the x86_64 Linux CI runners — a foreign-arch ELF fails with "Exec format error", while a same-arch foreign-OS ELF loads and then segfaults due to the differing syscall ABI.
- The smoke test now validates the ELF header (magic + machine + OSABI branding) for known cross-exec platforms instead of executing them, which also catches mislabeled or truncated artifacts. Native platforms are still always executed.
Changed
FFmpeg 8.1.2 version bump
- All Dockerfiles and CI updated from the previous FFmpeg version to 8.1.2.
- Docker
base_tagpinning for reproducible builds; debug mode switched off. - Build-script updates across the dependency chain (openssl, fontconfig, libbluray, libdvdread, davs2, rav1e, libvpx, xavs2, xvid, libwebp, libvpl, AMF, SDL2, ffnvcodec, CUDA, whisper, librsvg) including libudfread build-log improvements.
🔐 Release integrity: SHA256 sidecars and signed manifest
- Every release asset now ships with a
.sha256sidecar containing its hex digest. - A
manifest.jsonlists every asset with its SHA-256 hash and byte size. - The pipeline can additionally attach
manifest.json.sig, a detached ASCII-armored GPG signature overmanifest.jsonsigned with the NoMercy Entertainment org key; the media server treats the signature as optional when absent. - Applies to both Release Candidate prereleases and final releases.
Platforms
- Linux x86_64 / aarch64
- Windows x86_64
- macOS x86_64 / arm64 (Apple Silicon)
- FreeBSD x86_64 (new)
All six platforms passed the full manual test suite (tests/tests.sh / tests/tests.ps1) on real hardware, including hardware-acceleration verification (NVENC / AMF / VPL) where applicable.
