Nomlings v0.2.0

@nomling-bot nomling-bot released this 05 Jul 23:25

Meet the Nomlings

Nomlings is a desktop app for raising a nomling: a tiny pixel creature that
lives on your screen and grows as you work. Yours hatches from an egg, evolves
through Baby, Teen, and Adult forms, and reacts to what you do all day.

Bee

If you use Claude Code, your nomling feeds on your sessions: finished tasks
hatch and level it up, tool calls earn XP, and token usage keeps it fed. Don't
use Claude Code? Pick companion mode on first launch and it grows from
manual care and a tasks/habits checklist instead, no coding required.

Highlights

  • Companion mode: a mode toggle for people who just want a desktop pet.
On first launch, pick "I use Claude Code" or "Just a pet, please." Companion
pets level up from a tasks/habits checklist (check one off for +10 XP and a
snack, once per task per day) and a new PLAY button, feed a little slower so
foraged snacks keep up, and never touch Claude Code at all: no hooks, no
    hidden folders.
  • A creature that grows with you: Egg to Adult across four forms, with a
live XP bar and level readout.
  • Make it yours: the cosmetic pack unlocks alternate bodies, device
shells, and free screen/pet coloring. Purely visual; XP and snacks carry
    over.
  • Stays out of the way: always-on-top, click-through, and float options;
drag it anywhere. Right-click opens settings.
  • Adjustable UI: size your nomling and scale the settings menu to taste.
  • You're in control of updates: the app only ever checks for new
versions; updating is one click in settings and never happens on its own.

File Notes
Nomlings_0.2.0_x64-setup.exe Windows installer (recommended). Per-user, no admin.
Nomlings_0.2.0_portable.zip Portable build: unzip, add to PATH, run nomling setup.
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums; verify with Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256.

Windows SmartScreen may warn because the binaries are unsigned: click
More info, then Run anyway.

Getting started

  1. Install and launch. Pick your pet type when asked.
  2. Poke the egg or start caring for it to make it hatch.
  3. Claude pet: keep running claude as usual (the installer wires up the
hooks for you; on the portable zip, run nomling setup once). Companion
    pet
: open settings (right-click the pet), add a task or two, and check
them off as you go. Full guide in the owner's manual.

Changelog (v0.2.0)

  • New: companion mode, a first-run picker, a tasks/habits checklist with
once-per-day rewards, and a PLAY action, so the app works fully without
    Claude Code installed.
  • Feeding now earns a little XP too, and the on-screen level bar tracks
per-level progress for companion pets so growth stays visible day to day.
  • Settings panel redesigned: wider two-column layout so nothing needs
scrolling, with clearer hints for every action (including the new PLAY
button) and a mode switch that explains whichever pet type is selected.
  • Fixed an animation bug where leveling up could be masked by the regular
celebrate animation instead of showing the evolve flourish.

This is the first public release. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Changelog (v0.1.2)

  • One-click updates: the UPDATE button in settings now downloads,
verifies, installs, and restarts for you. No more trip to the browser.
Downloads are cryptographically verified against the app's built-in key
before anything runs, and nothing ever updates without your click.
  • The update check now re-runs hourly and when settings reopen, so a running
app notices new releases without a restart.
  • (from v0.1.1) Nomlings forage: one snack on their own every 30 minutes
(max 5), even while the app is closed. Pets without Claude Code never go
    unfeedable.
