GlouOS 0.9

Added

  • A Windows 11-style taskbar. The panel has been rebuilt to feel like
    Windows 11: a centred Start button (the GlouOS logo), a search icon, pinned
    apps, the system tray and clock on the right, a weather widget in the corner
    and a show-desktop sliver at the very edge. On a dual-monitor setup both
    screens now get their own matching taskbar.
  • Taskbar alignment settings. A new Taskbar page under
    GlouOS Settings → Appearance & Style lets you put your taskbar apps on the
    left, centre or right, with a live preview of each. The clock and
    tray always stay pinned to the right, exactly like Windows.
  • A brand-new File Explorer. GlouOS no longer leans on Dolphin: it ships
    its own File Explorer that looks and behaves like the Windows 11 one — an
    address bar with breadcrumbs, back / forward / up, "Search this folder", a
    clean toolbar (New folder, Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, View) and a
    Windows-style sidebar (Home, Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Music,
    Videos, This PC). It is fast, works on your real folders, and has a
    Windows 11-style right-click menu with a New submenu (folder, text
    document, and more), an icon row for the common actions, Open in Terminal,
    Copy as path, Compress and Properties.
  • All drives in the sidebar. The File Explorer sidebar now has a Drives
    divider that lists every mounted disk (with its size), so your extra game and
    storage drives are one click away.
  • btrfs-assistant is now preinstalled, giving Btrfs installs a proper
    graphical front-end for browsing and restoring snapper snapshots.
  • A GlouOS look of its own. A new GlouOS Dark colour scheme (a stylish
    dark slate rather than pitch black) and the GlouOS green accent are applied
    across the desktop, so the system has its own identity instead of stock KDE.

Changed

  • Every GlouOS app now follows light and dark mode. GlouOS Settings, the
    Welcome Center, the Package Manager, Updates, the Game Center, the File
    Explorer and the Taskbar page all track your chosen theme — switch to dark
    and they turn into the same dark slate as the taskbar instead of staying
    white.
  • Updates now bring the desktop across too. When you update in place, GlouOS
    applies the current desktop layout (the new taskbar, accent and lock screen)
    to your profile once, backing up your previous configuration first — so an
    existing install gets the new look without a reinstall. See the note below.

Fixed

  • The installer no longer stretches across two monitors. On dual-monitor
    machines the installer now stays on a single screen for the whole install.
  • The login and lock screens behave on dual monitors. The custom GlouOS
    login now appears on the primary screen only instead of being duplicated and
    misaligned across both, and the lock screen matches it.
  • Discord screen-sharing is no longer upside-down for the people watching.
    GlouOS ships a Discord launcher that disables the broken hardware video
    encoder path responsible for the flipped image.
  • Taskbar alignment actually works. Setting the taskbar to Left or Right no
    longer dumps everything into the middle or merges the clock with your apps —
    the app group moves and the clock stays on the right, as it should.
  • The Taskbar settings previews are now real little taskbar mock-ups, so Left,
    Centre and Right are clearly different at a glance.

Removed

  • Dolphin is no longer the default file manager. The new GlouOS File
    Explorer takes its place. (Dolphin can still be installed from the Package
    Manager if you want it.)

Updating from 0.8: open GlouOS Updates and click Download & install
(or run sudo glouos update). This delivers every new app and fix above. The
first time you log in afterwards, GlouOS applies the new Windows 11 taskbar,
accent and lock screen to your desktop automatically — your previous panel
configuration is backed up to
~/.local/state/glouos/desktop-backup-* in case you want it back. No
reinstall needed.
