xCell Documentation

📝 Introduction

xCell is a lightweight spreadsheet app built into MicroOS. It gives you a scrollable grid of cells that can hold plain text, numbers, or formulas that reference other cells, and saves/loads as .xcl files through the standard File Manager.

📐 Grid Layout

  • Columns: A through J (10 total), 5 visible at a time.
  • Rows: 1 through 20, 6 visible at a time.
  • Cell reference: [Column][Row], e.g. C4.

Important

The grid is bigger than the screen. Use the arrows in the top bar to scroll: ◄ ▲ ▼ ►.

✍️ Editing Cells

  • Click a cell to open a text prompt and type its contents.
  • Cancel the prompt to clear the cell.
  • A cell holds one of:
    • Text — anything that isn't a number or a formula, shown as-is.
    • A number — reformatted (trailing zeros trimmed, rounded to 2 decimals).
    • A formula — see below.

🧮 Formulas

⌨️ Syntax Conventions

  • Marker: a formula starts with = or (.
  • Cell references: any typed column/row, e.g. A1, J20.
  • Ranges: [Cell]:[Cell], e.g. A1:B3 (used inside SUM).

Warning

The on-screen keyboard used on real hardware has no key for + - * / =, in either shift state — only letters, digits, and space , . ? ! : ; " ( ). Because of that, every operator has a second, keyboard-typable spelling, and the formula marker doubles as the expression's opening bracket:

Both spellings always work. =A1+B2 and (A1,B2) do the same thing — the second form is the one you can actually type on hardware.

SUM([Cell]:[Cell])

  • Full Name: Sum
  • Description: Adds every cell in a rectangular range together.
  • Example: (SUM(A1:A5)) sums A1 through A5.

Errors

  • A formula that fails to parse, divides by zero, or refers back to itself (directly or through another formula) displays #ERR.
  • A number that's too wide to fit its cell displays ### instead of a misleading truncated value.

🖱️ Right-Click Menus

Right-click a row number, a column letter, or a cell to open a context menu.

Row / Column Menu

  • Copy — copies every cell in that row/column.
  • Paste — overwrites every cell in that row/column with the last copied row/column.
  • Clear — empties every cell in that row/column.

Cell Menu

  • The top line previews the cell's raw content or formula (or (empty)).
  • Copy — copies the cell's raw content (formula included).
  • Copy Output — copies the cell's computed value instead, so pasting drops in a static number rather than the formula.
  • Paste — overwrites the cell with the last copied cell.
  • Clear — empties the cell.

💾 Saving & Loading

  • Save: click the left side of the Save | Save As bar. Overwrites the currently open sheet, or prompts for a name if none is open yet.
  • Save As: click the right side of the bar to save under a new name.
  • Sheets are saved as .xcl files and reopened from File Manager like any other document.
