Roadmap

Hello!

This is a partial roadmap for NotProton. I want to share what I am working on without making specific promises about when these things will arrive. I am going to start doing most of my development in public. Expect to see some stuff on the dev branch in the near future.

Short term roadmap:

First, I want to listen to feedback. I made some design decisions, I want to see if people like/agree with them. Do people hate the 'CrossOver settings are shown as launch options for a game' decision? That made testing easier for me, but do people find it bothersome? Are there parts of the UI that users find confusing? I'd want to address those things. If there are things that are not terribly hard for me to do but that improve user experience substantially, I want to do those things.

The UI used for patching Steam and deploying CrossOver is not exactly bug free in terms of visual glitches and design issues. I'd like to improve it.

Support for the non-Preview version of CrossOver is coming in the very short term future, with better support for setting environmental variables coming alongside it. Also coming: full support for having multiple copies of CrossOver deployed as Compatibility Tools at the same time. A user will be able to deploy multiple copies of CrossOver and they will show up as separate Compatibility Tools inside Steam.

I will be adding support for the Rosetta version of CrossOver that is included with the FEX version. FEX CrossOver supports letting a user create a Rosetta bottle in addition to FEX bottles. I will present the FEX version of CrossOver as two entries inside the Compatibility tab in Steam - 'FEX ' and 'Rosetta '. A user will be able to set that on a per game basis.

Medium term roadmap:

I want to add support for global default settings. I plan to put this in the Preferences - Compatibility tab for Steam itself. This would allow a user to set something such as 'turn on AVXV2 for all Windows games' and have that apply to any Windows title that they did not explicitly disable that for.

NotProton will hide non-compatible options when a user has FEX selected. There is no D3DMetal when using FEX CrossOver, so it will hide that option as well as the option to select D3DMetal itself.

I have a clever, experimental (and optional) feature that fixes a long running annoyance of mine. I have a way to create a macOS full screen 'game space' for a game, at the time the game starts. I also have a way for a user to set the maximum resolution that the game sees without modifying the resolution of the Mac itself. It's quite cool. It's also quite early, but is high on my priority list as it improves QOL quite a bit. No more SwitchResX.

That's my current planned short-term roadmap. Minus anything I am forgetting. Some of those features are deep in development, some have not started development yet but are easy enough to do.
