Event Helpers plugin won't install

Hi, I have posted this bug in https://feedback.noteplan.co/bugs/p/plugin-wont-install but not sure if Github is the preferred place (it would be nice to note that somewhere in the app...).

Pasting here for convenience:

Noteplan: Version 3.0.23 (637), MacOS Big Sur, via SetApp.

I'm trying to install the Event Helpers plugin but it doesn't seem to work. After click download, it enables the checkbox next to it, but the plugin is actually not available to use. After going back to the preferences, you can see it is indeed not showing as a installed plugin.
I have recorded a video to show it, as well the console output:

Tried restarting Noteplan, same thing.

I was able to install and use "Note Statistics" and "Templates", so whatever is happening seems to be specific to "Event Helpers".

Hi, @lfilho, and thanks for the high quality bug report.
I can see that it was trying to download two different versions of this plugin. We've just changed the underlying release mechanism, and earlier today I spotted that we had two orphan releases in the repo (as in fact the log mentions near the end). I've since removed them, and so you should now see only a single v0.3.0 release.
Please try that. If that still fails, then @EduardMe will need to help, as its then out of the hands of that plugin developer (me).

I just had a quick look on my side and it seems to work. BigSur/Setapp is also fine all fine. Let me know if it persists. I recommend to delete the plugin in the folder, then download again.

@EduardMe I had already tried deleting the folder when I opened the issue.

I have just tested it again right now and it continued to happen 😢. Tried:

1. Installing it with my already open app. No deal.
2. Delete the plugin folder, install it. No deal.
3. Delete the plugin folder, quit and reopen the app, install it. No deal.

I wonder what the 2 Local Plugins are. My guess is that when we rename a plugin in the Repo, it results in some marooned folders. They should be overridden my more recent plugin versions. But if the plugin name has changed, maybe not. @jgclark We need to think/understand this and be careful about renaming plugins @EduardMe I wonder whether you want a mechanism to clean the plugins directory. Since it will be rare that people have Local Plugins, I wonder whether there are some other failsafes/checks can be done when Local Plugins are found @luis I would suggest deleting your whole Plugins directory and let Noteplan rebuild it (if you haven't done that already).

@dwertheimer I think the 2 local plugins where the Templates and Note Statistics, as those are the only ones I ever installed, and both were through the official dialog in the preferences.

I confirmed there's no /Users/<myuser>/Library/Containers/co.noteplan.NotePlan-setapp/ folder at all.
I was able to find a /Users/<myuser>/Library/Containers/NotePlan/Data/Library/Application%20Support/co.noteplan.NotePlan-setapp/ path though (but no temp_* folders at that time anymore).

Also, I see a lot of errors prefixed with CloudSync... Is that the CloudKit/iCloud Drive/Dropbox sync? If so, i have that turned off.

Ah, the plugin’ min version is: "noteplan.min_version": "3.0.25", and you wrote yo are using Version 3.0.23 (637). That’s why it’s not working. How could we miss that.

Ah! That's great! I'm not on my work computer now so I'll have to test and report back later.

In the meantime:

• May I suggest implementing an error handling that would check and accordingly throw an informative error about it?
• May I suggest using "semver" (semantic versioning)? Usually the third number wouldn't introduce any baking changes so by seeing "3.2.0" (for example), it would be more apparent what's going on.
• If I install the beta, will setapp continue to update future versions normally?

Yes, in the current appstore version of NotePlan I made a mistake and the unsupported plugins are displayed, but won’t work. In the new version they won’t be displayed, if they are not supported. Maybe they still should display, but grayed out? Not sure.

How do you mean “semver”? Aren’t we using versions such as “3.2.0”?

The setapp beta will not automatically update. Once the release is out, you need to switch back to the official Release on Setapp. I’m making announcements in the #release channel of GitHub.

@EduardMe I think what he means is that technically (according to Semantic Versioning standards) the only difference between a 3.0.23 and a 3.0.25 should be bug fixes. No features or breaking changes. So basically these releases you're making with new features should be minor releases, e.g. "3.1.0" and then 3.1.1 will fix bugs in 3.1.0 but not introduce new features.
