slate-ntfs 0.7.1

Warning: limited testing. slate-ntfs has been tested, but only in a limited setting (Ubuntu).
While tested performance has shown to have been very stable, production machine can be risky: a driver bug can corrupt data on the volume.
Keep backups ready.

Highlights

  • The kernel module is now called slate-ntfs (loaded as slate_ntfs). The filesystem type stays ntfsrs. Upgrading removes the old ntfs_rs module and its autoload file automatically, and the package now reloads the module reliably on upgrade.
  • Faster large reads: read-ahead is now at least 4 MiB per file. In cold reads of a 2 GB file, slate-ntfs and NTFS-3G both read at the limit of the test SSD on its USB link, and the in-kernel driver of Linux 7.1 was about 1% slower in every round. See the README's Benchmarks section.
  • Builds against Linux 7.1 as well as older kernels.
  • New benchmark: kernel/tests/benchmark_copy.sh times cold reads and copies of one file per driver, against NTFS-3G.

slate-ntfs 0.7.0

Warning: limited testing. slate-ntfs has been tested, but only in a limited setting (Ubuntu). While tested performance has
shown to have been very stable, production machine can be risky: a driver bug can corrupt data on the volume.
Keep backups ready.

Highlights

  • Wider volume support for writes: clusters from 512 bytes to 2 MiB, 1 KiB or
4 KiB file records, and 512-byte or 4 KiB sectors.
  • Fragmented and large journals: a $LogFile that Windows left in several
pieces is written and recovered like a contiguous one, up to just under 4 GiB.
  • Split $MFT: the mounted driver reads and writes a file table spread over
several records, and grows it beyond record 0 when needed.
  • Windows-forbidden characters in names (" * : < > ? \ |) are stored with
the WSL private-use convention, so Wine and Proton prefixes work on a normal
    mount.
  • Fewer device flushes for namespace-heavy work, faster statfs, and
directory listings that report file types directly.
  • Repair: ntfs-chkdsk --repair now unmounts a read-only mount the mount
helper left behind before repairing; replay handles torn MFT records.
  • License: the project is now MIT. The kernel module is dual MIT/GPL, and the
upcase table ported from NTFS-3G stays GPL-2.0-or-later. See the README's
    License section.
