Nutek Cipher

Encrypt and decrypt files and text using the command line interface (CLI) on Linux, Windows, macOS, or the desktop app on macOS.

Windows - Important!

Before downloading the nutek-cipher_null_x86_64-pc-windows-gnu.zip file, add the Downloads folder, or any directory where you plan to download this file, to the exceptions list in Windows Defender.

  1. Open Virus & threat protection.
  2. Click Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
  3. Under Exclusions, click Add or remove exclusions.
  4. Add the target download folder.
  5. Download the file.
  6. Verify the SHA256 checksum for file integrity.
  7. Extract the archive.
  8. Remove the exclusion for the download folder.
  9. Execute nutek-cipher.exe - this should prompt Windows Defender again.
  10. Return to Virus & threat protection and access Protection history.
  11. Locate nutek-cipher under Threat quarantined and restore it.

SHA256

Download the archive for your operating system along with the corresponding *.sha256 file.

On UNIX (Linux/macOS), navigate to the directory containing both files and execute this command:

shasum -a 256 -c nutek-cipher...name_of_your_file.sha256

On Windows:

Get-Content nutek-cipher_null_x86_64-pc-windows-gnu.zip.sha256
Get-FileHash nutek-cipher_null_x86_64-pc-windows-gnu.zip -Algorithm SHA256 | Format-List

The archive should pass the test if it is the one downloaded from the official source. On Windows, ensure the lowercase output of the first command matches the uppercase output of the second command.

Algorithm

This program continues to utilize the aes-gcm-siv = "0.11.1" crate from crates.io.

Changes

The usage of the password (key) and nonce has been simplified.

Execute the program with the --help flag to view the new menu.

Installation using Cargo

cargo install nutek-cipher

With Rust and Cargo installed, this command will install Nutek Cipher to your PATH, allowing you to run it like any other program, potentially circumventing the Windows Defender issue.
