Whisper 1.0.5

Text size for articles, a way to keep a source out of the main feed, and fixes for things readers reported.

  • Article text size: Settings → Article text size, under Reading. Small, Default, Large or Larger. It changes the article in the reader and leaves the feed alone.
  • Keep a source out of All. Each source has a new Show in All switch. Turn it off and the source still updates and still shows under its categories and in search, just not in the main feed. Handy for a feed you want to read in its own corner.
  • Show summaries: under Feed layout, turn it off to keep pictures and headlines without the text underneath.
  • Article times: how long ago (2h), the time published (14:32), or both.
  • With read articles hidden, the last few in the feed now scroll away like the rest, and saved articles leave the feed once read and stay in Bookmarks.
  • The source editor says "Categories" everywhere instead of switching between tags and categories.

Fixes:

  • A "Syncing" notice could stay up long after the sync had finished. Whisper now notices and takes it down.
  • A picture credit such as "Getty Images" no longer stays behind as a line of its own when the reader moves the picture to the top.
  • Bylines like "staff@site.com (Name)" now show just the name.
  • The tour's highlight no longer runs off the edge of the screen.

If you installed 1.0.4 from here, install this over it. Your sources and settings stay put. Copies from Google Play or F-Droid are signed with different keys, so they can't be updated with this one.

Whisper 1.0.4

A small release on top of 1.0.3.

  • About now has a Contact us section with an email address, the website, and a link for bug reports. Google Play asks news apps for this, and it's handy to have anyway.
  • The links under the app's name in About wrap onto a second line, so none of them are hidden off the edge of the screen.

Everything else is the same as 1.0.3.

If you installed 1.0.3 from here, install this over it. Your sources and settings stay put.

Whisper 1.0.3

A tidy-up release, mostly small things picked up from a week of daily use.

What's new

  • Source cards now show the name first, with the site and categories underneath (for example "science.org · Tech"). The full address is still on each source's page, and in the duplicates view where you need it to tell two feeds apart.
  • Deleting a category happens straight away and can be undone, the same way removing a source already worked.
  • Dialog buttons say what they'll do, like "Remove" or "Rename", rather than just "OK".
  • An empty feed now gives you a button to fix it: add a source, try again, or show everything if a filter is hiding it all.
  • On a tablet or a phone turned sideways, the reader keeps lines to a comfortable length instead of stretching across the whole screen.
  • FreshRSS matching is much faster on the phone. What used to take up to three minutes now takes about a second.

Fixes

  • The save button no longer shifts when you open a story's menu.
  • The save and menu buttons are visible on pale photos.
  • Stock tickers no longer vanish from full articles.
  • Source names show up again on narrow Mosaic tiles.
  • No more stray space before the comma in the author line.
  • The "Show all" link on the duplicates banner is easier to read.
  • The share sheet just says "Share".
  • Adding a feed now stops reading at 10 MB, like sync does, so a broken feed can't run the phone out of memory.

Other changes

  • The app is English only for now. The translations inherited from Neo Feed were all under 13% complete, which left most screens half translated. They'll come back once they're finished properly.
  • Diagnostics reports no longer include article IDs.
  • The FreshRSS match now reports its real download size.
  • The "display over other apps" card is gone from Settings. That permission is explained on the Launcher page instead.
  • One fewer library (multidex).

Installing

If you installed 1.0.2 from here, just install this over it. Your sources and settings stay put.

To get told about future releases, add this repository to Obtainium (https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium).

The Play Store and F-Droid builds are signed with different keys, so a copy installed from here can only be updated from here.

Fixes F-Droid's check for proprietary code: the launcher panel's code is now under Whisper's own name. Everything else is as in 1.0.1.

Already have Whisper from Google Play or F-Droid? Each store signs the app with its own key, so this APK won't install over it. To switch, back up first (Settings → Backup), then uninstall and install this one.

Whisper 1.0.1

@defsix defsix released this 05 Oct 15:19

This is the first release F-Droid can build, along with fixes from testing 1.0.0.

  • Signing in is now two steps: the server address first, then your username and password, so password managers fill in the right fields. The address is no longer lost if you switch apps halfway through.
  • Backups are safer. If you choose a folder that already holds a backup, Whisper now asks whether to restore, replace or cancel, and every backup keeps the previous copy.
  • The reader is cleaner. The card's picture goes on top instead of a site's logo, and a site's own "By / Published / Updated" lines are gone.
  • Background syncs are lighter, so they finish before Android stops them.
  • The store title is now "Whisper: RSS Reader", and the About page now shows Nyancat Labs.
  • A build fix so F-Droid can build Whisper from source.

Curate. Read. Breathe.

The first release of Whisper, from Nyancat Labs: an RSS reader for the feeds you chose, that tells you why it put an article where it did — and lets you disagree.

Highlights

  • No account, no trackers, no ads. Everything stays on your phone and works offline.
  • Ordering you can see. Tap any article to see why it got the size it did — recency, how often you read that source, whether several sources cover the story. More/less like this, a screen showing exactly what Whisper has learned, and a reset that really resets. Chronological order is the default.
  • Four layouts: Cards, Magazine, List and Mosaic, with columns on tablets.
  • Sources you control: add a site or feed address, import OPML or your browser's bookmarks, or browse the built-in feed library (39 topics, 50 countries) without telling anyone what you're looking for.
  • Read later keeps the whole article, pictures included, for offline reading. Full article text per feed or for all of them.
  • Optional extras: two-way sync with your own FreshRSS server, weather in the glance row without location permission, scheduled OPML and settings backups to a folder you choose, and a home-screen page in Lawnchair.

Good to know

  • Sync is supported with FreshRSS only.
  • Requires Android 8.0 or newer.
  • Coming to F-Droid and Google Play. Until then, build from source — see the README.
