Our Community

Threat Dragon has a large, global community. This project is shaped by more than code: feedback, bug reports, feature requests, documentation, testing, code changes, and sharing Threat Dragon are just a few of the many ways the project moves forward. This manifesto is our commitment to supporting those contributions and recognizing the people behind them.

Open source is built on small acts of participation. Many contributions happen at a single moment in time. This pattern is normal, expected, and valuable. We are making it easier to stay involved over time by strengthening feedback loops and meeting the community where it already is. If you are reading this, you are part of our community.
Feedback Loops

Historically, feedback has funneled through GitHub issues. While this has served the project well, it often means feedback arrives after a release. Earlier input helps shape the roadmap and prioritization, validates direction, and ensures that we are building what our community needs.

Lowering the barrier to feedback creates space for voices beyond developers. Perspectives from product, UX, design, and other disciplines belong in the conversation and must be heard earlier.

Moving Forward

Monthly Town Halls

Threat Dragon will host monthly town halls as a place for our community to ask questions, share workflows, and give feedback before releases.

This GitHub Discussion will serve as the public thread for town halls. Notes and follow-up issues will be linked after each call so conversations remain open and transparent.

Quarterly Updates

Threat Dragon will publish a quarterly presentation covering what has changed, what is next, and other project updates.

Engagement

Town halls will be promoted in Slack, on Bluesky, and through a pinned GitHub Discussion, with references in the README and contributor documentation.

Thanks again to @jgadsden for facilitating and hosting Threat Dragon's first Town Hall!

Discussion Topics

• How do we get more community engagement to help steer the roadmap/direction of Threat Dragon? (hence town halls!)
• Templates use-cases: how some development teams were accomplishing a template workflow prior to the feature, alternative developer workflows, and how to keep the workflows simple
• TM BOM: it may make sense for Threat Dragon to import from and export to the TM BOM format as opposed to adopting it as its native schema. This can be done as a new feature as opposed to a breaking change to the schema. No firm decision yet.
• Threat Dragon v3: Version 3 should only be created to facilitate a breaking change. Breaking changes are disruptive and require clean upgrade paths. Given the pain of upgrades and breaking changes, our preference is to defer this until it is truly necessary.
• Graphing library is tightly coupled to schema:
  • Positional information is necessarily required in the TD Schema, otherwise how do we draw a graph?
  • The current system is not graphing library agnostic, and we do not control the library. For example, upgrading to the latest @antv/x6 version may technically be a breaking change that requires an upgrade path (TBD, research required - see Antv/x6 - upgrade to version 3.x #1546 )
  • We may need to accept this as a known limitation and maintain custom compat layers when there are major version / breaking updates to the underlying diagramming tool
• @lreading is working towards the v1 release of https://github.com/lreading/slide-spec - a open source tool for creating presentations in an open format. This is an option for Threat Dragon quarterly updates (we will evaluate!)

Decisions

• Version 3 is not strictly required yet
• Continue Town Halls as an experiment

• TM BOM import/export feature (continuation)
• Vue3 migration
• Graph page usability/UX
