What's new

  • Watch. A new section of the library window, in the style of the Apple TV app: Home, Movies and TV Shows over the catalogs of the add-ons you install, with a carousel of featured titles, shelves, a Top 10, genres, See All grids and search. Title pages show the artwork, cast, seasons and episodes, and a stream picker with quality badges (4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, 1080p).
  • Add-ons. MacLC hosts add-ons that speak Stremio's add-on protocol. Cinemeta (titles, posters, search) is built in. Settings › Add-ons lists the Official and Community add-ons and installs them in one click, or from an address (stremio:// links too). File › Search Add-ons… finds a title and plays the streams your add-ons offer: web links, YouTube videos, or torrents through MacLC's own BitTorrent streaming. MacLC itself ships no films, shows or streams; add-ons are third-party services, so use them only for content you have the right to watch.
  • Sound modes. Voice Boost, Night, Cinema, Music, Bass Boost, Spoken Word, Headphones, Small Speakers and Custom, each with an Intensity slider, in Audio › Sound Mode and the Sound button of the playback controls. Voice Boost lifts dialogue without raising music and effects (measured: +7.4 dB of dialogue advantage on a 5.1 mix, +4.8 dB in the voice band on stereo).
  • A 10-band equalizer (Audio › Equalizer…, ⌥⌘E), with a limiter that keeps loud moments from clipping.
  • Play on TV (beta). The Play On button sends what is playing to an Apple TV or another AirPlay receiver, or to a Chromecast.

Fixes

  • Settings cards follow Dark mode when MacLC's appearance differs from the system's.
  • A menu item without a symbol no longer removed the symbols of its whole group.
  • Chromecast playback no longer stops before the end of a file, and the HLS output publishes every final segment (fixes in VideoLAN's code, made on the way to AirPlay).

Install and first launch

  1. Open the disk image and drag MacLC to Applications.
  2. Open MacLC once. macOS says it could not verify MacLC is free of malware: click Done.
  3. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll to Security and click Open Anyway next to "MacLC was blocked…", then confirm with your password or Touch ID. Only needed once.

Why this step? macOS opens downloaded apps without asking only when they are signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which requires a paid Apple Developer Program membership (99 USD a year). MacLC is a free, open-source project: it is signed ad hoc, which proves the files were not altered since the build but does not identify the author to Apple. macOS therefore asks you to confirm once. It does not mean the app is damaged or unsafe; the source is public and the SHA-256 of the disk image is below. The disk image contains the same explanation in English and French, and the README has the details (Terminal alternative included).

If macOS ever says MacLC "is damaged", the download is incomplete: download it again and compare the SHA-256.

Requirements

macOS 26 or later, Apple Silicon. Watch and add-ons need an internet connection. Optional: yt-dlp for File › Open Web Video and YouTube streams (brew install yt-dlp), SVP 4 Mac for the SVP interpolation engine.
