Following the guide and running npm start leads to the following:

Sideloading the Office Add-in...
Error: Unable to start debugging.
Error: Unable to sideload the Office Add-in. 
Error: Sideload to the Outlook app is not supported.

I'm getting the same problem on both Windows and Mac running LTS of Node + NPM.

Hi @fredrikAdaptive,

After running npm start on Mac, you must then manually sideload the add-in. For guidance, see Sideload manually. Please let us know if this works for you.

Although I was unable to find any documentation regarding the matter, the problem got solved by signing in to the Teams Toolkit-CLI, using the following command:
teamsapp auth login m365

This solved the problem on both Mac and Windows, and it should probably be specified somewhere that signing in to the Teams Toolkit-CLI via terminal / CMD is required, in addition to having a Microsoft account that meets the requirements.

Thanks for sharing how you were able to resolve this, @fredrikAdaptive. Glad to hear you were able to get it to work.

I'll look into adding this to our documentation. To clarify, did you use the Teams Toolkit to create your add-in project or did you use another tool to create it? Additionally, did you also get the "Sideload to the Outlook app is not supported" error when you first ran npm start on Windows?

I followed the steps in the guide using the Yeoman Generator.

1. I ran yo office via CMD (W11) and Terminal (Mac) and completed the steps for Outlook. I tried various combinations of manifest only and unified app.
2. I ran npm start and got the result pasted below.

I got similar error message while running on Mac. Both error messages could have been more informative, as the only problem seemed to derive from not being signed in to teamsapp via the console.

Error on Windows prior after running npm start without having signed in with teamsapp auth login m365:

Upon teamsapp auth logout m365 today, I now get a prompt asking me to login. Not sure why that didn't appear initially, the error message today gives feedback regarding a lack of login / timeout. It also opened a browser window for me to sign in via:
