cool42 1.1.0 — catches throttling that macOS reports as Nominal

@Okle42 Okle42 released this 09 Oct 18:44

Stock macOS let the P-cores of a Mac mini M4 drop 7.4% under full CPU+GPU load while thermal pressure read Nominal the whole time. 1.1.0 catches that.

Highlights

  • Clock throttling check (silent throttling) — throttling now means any of: thermal pressure above Nominal, GPU CLTM > 5%, or a hot P-cluster (≥ 100 °C) running below 95% of its all-core full-load clock (M4 = 3936 MHz, measured). On 2026-10-06/07 it logged real "pressure still Nominal" throttling down to 2,949 MHz. Chips other than the M4 need clockFullLoadMHz set.
  • Default criticalTemp 100 → 108 °C — the cool42 curve runs at full speed at ~104 °C under the same load, so 100 °C would have blocked AI work on a machine that isn't throttling. Config files that hard-code 100 need a manual edit.
  • New panel — monitoring only, borderless Liquid Glass like the Dock, one-click fan mode (Curve / Fixed / Auto); everything else moved to a Settings window (⌘,).
  • Renamed to cool42 everywhere (CLI, daemon, paths, MCP server cool42). Old cool91 installs are not migrated — uninstall the old one first.
  • perf comparison scripts (extras/perf_vs_temp.py) and the 2026-09-25 same-machine data in docs/perf-2026-09-25/.

Known limits

  • Ad-hoc signed, not notarized. install.sh clears the quarantine attribute, so you are vouching for the package yourself — read install.sh first. A root LaunchDaemon controls the fan.
  • Tested on one Mac mini M4 (macOS 26 / 27). The stock-vs-curve comparison is a single run (n=1).
  • The curve trades noise and power for speed: ~17% more CPU power on that run.
  • Reports from other chips are very welcome: open a chip report issue.
