PairFree 0.1.3
A preview of PairFree, an open alternative to the PeatsAudio app for SoundPEATS earbuds. Android 12 or newer.
Tested on the SOUNDPEATS H3 and Air5 Pro+. Other SoundPEATS models use the same protocol and should connect, but nobody has tried them yet. The Tested earbuds table shows what works on each model.
Changes since 0.1.2
SoundPeter is now PairFree. The app is growing into one app for earbuds of every brand, and the old name was too close to SoundPEATS, a vendor's name. Nothing else changes in how the app works.
PairFree has a new app ID (io.github.omegadestroyer.pairfree), so Android installs it next to SoundPeter rather than over it. If you have SoundPeter:
- In SoundPeter's Sound tab, export any EQ profiles you saved (Export file). PairFree imports them.
- Install PairFree, import the profiles, then uninstall SoundPeter.
What it does
- Battery for each earbud and the case
- Noise control (off, ANC, transparency), ANC scenes and transparency levels
- Game mode, two devices at once, LDAC, and LE Audio on the Air5 Pro+
- Gestures, turning touch controls off, voice prompt volume and language, find my earbuds
- A 10-band equalizer with the official presets on the H3 and Air5 Pro+, your own saved profiles, and profile files you can share
- Ear tip fit test, and water drain on the Air5 Pro+
- Record from PeatsAudio: one recording of a model's settings and equalizer from the official app, so more models can be added (Device tab)
Privacy
No account and no cloud. PairFree has no internet permission: Android's app info for it lists only Nearby devices (Bluetooth).
Install
- Download PairFree-0.1.3.apk below and open it. Android asks to allow installing apps from your browser or file manager the first time.
- Close PeatsAudio. Only one app can control the earbuds at a time.
- Open PairFree, allow Nearby devices, and pick your earbuds.
The build is reproducible: F-Droid builds the same source, checks that the result matches this APK, and then ships this APK with this signature.
Known issues
- Air5 Pro+ LDAC: on a Samsung Galaxy S24 FE the phone refuses LDAC from the Air5 Pro+ and falls back to AAC, while the H3 runs LDAC on the same phone. It looks like an Air5 Pro+ firmware bug and has been reported to SoundPEATS. Leave LDAC off on the Air5 Pro+ to keep aptX. Results from other phones are welcome in an issue.
- Early preview, tested on one phone (Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, Android 16).
