Object metadata

The metadata of media embedded in the book (images, audio and video files) can also plucked from an external file, 'Object-metadata.csv' (see documents and templates/Object-metadata-TEMPLATE.csv). This comma-separated file can be generated from a macro-enabled Excel spreadsheet such as the one you find in documents and templates/Object-metadata-TEMPLATE.csv. Note that this file can be omitted if there is no need to record object-level information.

The spreadsheet permits to record data such as:

• (A) Object filename (eg 'fig1.jpg'); this is the filename as it appears in the epub, the extension could be different from that of the image that was originally placed in the InDesign file
• (B) Title of the work/artwork being represented (eg 'Statue of Ovid in Constanta')
• (C) Author of the work/artwork being represented (eg 'Ettore Ferrari')
• (D) Year the work/artwork portrayed was created/published (eg '1887')
• (E) Author of the digital reproduction, can sometimes be the same as C (eg 'Kurt Wichmann')
• (F) How the author of the digital reproduction has made it available to OBP (eg 'Published this digital image on Wikimedia Commons' or 'Produced this image for the present publication' or 'Published this image in Some Title' etc.)
• (G) License of the digital reproduction (eg CC BY 3.0)
• (H) DOI assigned to the digital reproduction (if any) or URL of the digital reproduction's online location (eg 'https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Statue_of_Roman_poet_Ovid_in_Constanţa,_Romania.jpg')

Please note that if you decide to record object-level data every piece of information must be provided (write 'None' or 'Unknown' when it is not available). The content of each cell must be enclosed in double quote marks during export so that very common characters such as comma can be safely entered in the spreadsheet. This requires running a macro from Excel's developer tab (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/291296/procedure-to-export-a-text-file-with-both-comma-and-quote-delimiters-i). If the metadata in the csv is not picked-up during conversion double-check that the file does not contain any unwanted new line character.
