A major accuracy and tooling release focused on more faithful gameplay across Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a substantially reworked audio engine, and stronger save, rewind, and validation systems.
- Gameplay accuracy across all three games improved through extensive ROM-backed corrections to subpixel movement, collision, solid objects, water, cameras, bosses, badniks, sidekicks, and act transitions. Sonic 1 retains broad end-to-end coverage, Sonic 2 remains the most complete module, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles continues to build on the playable Angel Island-to-Launch Base Zone route.
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles coverage expanded across later zones, including Marble Garden, Icecap, Mushroom Hill, and Launch Base, with further work on traversal objects, boss scenes, bonus stages, character routes, and multi-sidekick continuity. These areas remain at varying levels of completeness.
- Sound driver accuracy received one of the largest updates in 0.6. SMPS music and sound-effect handling, YM2612 FM, PSG, and DAC playback now follow more of the original drivers' request scheduling, channel ownership, fades, and extra-life restoration behavior, backed by recorded driver-state and chip-write comparisons. Full-game audio parity and listening validation remain ongoing.
- A faster FM core is now the default for new configurations, with the accurate Java Nuked core still available through
audio.fmCore=accurate. The fast core passes all 178 supported chip-register scripts, while the shared audio pipeline reduces allocation overhead and keeps live playback and recording on the same PCM path. - Save slots and Continue screens are now integrated more broadly. S3K data select includes ROM-rendered save slots and team selection, with cross-game support for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 while preserving each game's progress. Atomic save writes protect against interrupted updates, and ROM-backed Continue countdowns and character sequences restore the appropriate per-game restart state.
- Gameplay-scoped rewind captures and restores more dynamic objects, child relationships, riders, sidekicks, level events, and audio state, including across in-frame act reloads. Coverage checks catch missing state and recreation paths before they silently break a restore.
- Rendering and runtime performance improved across ROM art decoding, pattern-loading queues, animated tiles, foreground/background composition, shaders, capture, and rewind. Screenshot compression and disk writes now run through a bounded background worker.
- Recording and validation tools expanded with complete-run trace comparisons, visual and audio regression checks, and a shared live/offline recording pipeline. Trace recording and analysis tools now live in the optional TraceChaser project; neither it nor the disassemblies are required to build or play OpenGGF.
- Distribution and configuration include native Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads plus a universal JAR. Runtime settings use
config.yaml, with automatic migration from legacyconfig.jsonfiles. The experimental editor and its foundations continue to develop; a shipped modding framework remains future work.
Reminder: OpenGGF remains alpha software focused on research, preservation, and accuracy. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still incomplete overall, and known gameplay and audio differences remain. You must supply your own ROMs; no game assets are included. The universal JAR requires Java 21.
