Steam provides services that make connecting peers together (peer-to-peer networking) a lot easier. Creating an abstract networking layer that can support Steam networking services would prove useful in instances where this network path would be the highest quality. How this would compare to other in-house solutions I am not too sure of, but having more options for networking connections, especially when most of the time these would be invisible to users would be great.
