OpenPhantom Installer i2.0.0
OpenPhantom Installer 2.0.0
Installs Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace from your own disc, then the OpenPhantom patches that make it run properly on current hardware. You need your own copy of the game; the installer contains no game data.
Highlights
Co-op for up to four players. Play the campaign together, set up from the game's own main menu: press M on the title screen to host or join. Play on your own network, or over the internet through the project's relay with a session code or from the public list. No account is needed.
Signed. Setup, its uninstaller, the disc extractor, the movie converter and every DLL of this project are signed with an open source code signing certificate. Windows may still show a SmartScreen warning for a while after a release, because that warning goes by how often a file has been downloaded.
Added
- Multiplayer: co-op for two to four players, a lobby with an optional password, a map or a saved game to start from, and friendly fire on or off
- Joining a game that is already running: pick a hero, press I am ready, and you arrive beside the host
- Text chat in a level, opened with T
- Dev menu: an entity spawner, Appearance to wear another character's body, level selection, super run, and control with a controller (View opens it)
- The frame cap follows your screen's refresh rate and steps down to a half or a third when a scene cannot hold it. The frame rate page in Setup offers this automatic cap, your screen's rate exactly, no limit, or a number
Changed
- Version scheme: the installer is now 2.0.0 and carries patch 1.0.0. The installer's first number is always one higher than the patch's, the rest is the same
- The full installation includes the multiplayer; The patched game, without the extras leaves it out
- The cheat panel is now the dev menu, with its settings sorted under twelve headings
- DxWrapper's vertical sync ships on, and the fog ships at its computed limit
Fixed
- Setup no longer stops while unpacking the disc on a Windows without the Visual C++ runtime
- The beam of light out of a Jedi's hand, a fault in the game's own halo drawing
- Fades, the letterbox, the loading screen and the dev menu on Intel graphics
- Subtitles at 4K stay inside their bar
- Lifts, platforms and their riders are drawn smoothly, and a quicksave loaded on a moving platform no longer drops the characters through it
- Blast marks reach across the edges of the ground they hit, and a quick load leaves no wet footprints on dry ground
- Speakers keep moving for the whole of a long line, Qui-Gon's call at the end of the first level matches his voice, the jail prisoner waits, and a branching conversation is no longer closed under you
- The right stick no longer walks you, and a diagonal with Steam Input is no longer 41 per cent faster
- The audio sliders no longer lose a step each time that screen opens, and the music volume survives a change of 3-D provider
What it does
- Finds your disc or a mounted image, installs the game including
big.labwith its own extractor, and points the game's CD path at your installation, so the disc is not needed afterwards - Installs the twenty five patches, the multiplayer included. You pick what goes in
- Asks for the cutscene size, a frame rate cap and optionally a controller layout and a starting resolution, and writes the answers into
engine_fixes.ini - Converts the cutscenes to MP4 with the bundled FFmpeg
- Downloads nothing. Everything it installs is carried inside it
Install
Download OpenPhantom_Installer.exe, put the disc in or mount the image, and run it. It needs administrator rights, because the game lives under Program Files and reads its CD path from HKLM.
Setup speaks English and German, picked from your Windows display language. The multiplayer's menus also come in French, Italian and Spanish.
Upgrading
Run it over your existing installation and keep "Delete it first, then install fresh", which is already selected. Your saved games and settings are carried across, and no old DLL stays behind that would keep you out of multiplayer sessions.
Let it lay down the new engine_fixes.ini: only the shipped file switches the multiplayer on. Your previous engine_fixes.ini and dxwrapper.ini are kept beside the new ones with a .previous name.
Saved games are never deleted or overwritten, also not by the uninstaller.
Linux and the Steam Deck
The installer and the game work under Wine and Proton, the multiplayer included. Two things must be right, and neither reports an error when it is wrong:
WINEDLLOVERRIDESmust containdinput.dll=n,b, or the loader never runs and no patch is applied- Point your runner at
WMAIN.EXE, notTPM.EXE
If something does not work
Read engine_fixes.log next to WMAIN.EXE. Every fix logs what it found and what it did, and the first line names the version. For a multiplayer problem, attach the log from every machine that took part. The installer writes its own log as well.
On a LAN the multiplayer uses UDP 27960 and 27961, and Windows may ask about its firewall the first time you host. In public it uses UDP 27970 and HTTPS to relay.swopenphantom.org. What the relay processes is described at https://swopenphantom.org/legal.html#relay.
Known limitations
- Four players at most, and the session ends when the host leaves
- The chat works in levels only, in plain ASCII
- Team deathmatch is not offered yet
- DSOAL, the 3D sound, needs Microsoft's Visual C++ runtime for 32-bit programs, and the installer does not bring it

Third party components
The installer carries these rather than downloading them. Each licence is installed beside the files it covers, and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES-Installer.txt in the game folder names every one.

The source of the GPL and LGPL components is attached to this release, pinned to the exact revisions these binaries were built from: vlc-3.0.23.tar.xz, ffmpeg-9.0-d32b387f2b.tar.gz, x264-v0.165.3223-0480cb05.tar.gz, dsoal-r694-5c65e5fe.tar.gz and openal-soft-r10633-2dc741b5.tar.gz. You do not need it to play. If you mirror this release, keep those files with it.
HACL* and Mbed TLS are compiled unaltered into mods\multiplayer.dll for the relay connection; their licence texts are installed beside the game. dxwrapper.ini has seven settings tuned for this game; the DxWrapper binaries are untouched. The disc extractor and the installer script are MIT, built from source in installer/.
