WindowSmash v0.2.0-alpha.1 — source release

This release is source only. Build it from your own legally obtained copy of the game, following Build from source. It ships no executable, module images, shader caches or other game-derived files, and none will be attached. Download GitHub's source archive below, or clone the repository at this tag.

New since v0.1.0-alpha.1

  • Several game versions side by side: tools/install_version.py installs and builds a version (for example 13.0.5, as a layered RomFS over the base game) into its own folder with one command. The launchers ask which version to start (VERSIONS).
  • Linux x64 (experimental): the same game as a native Linux program, cross-compiled on Windows. It renders through DXVK and vkd3d-shader and uses SDL2 for the window, pads and sound (README-LINUX).
  • Online lobby: Play SSBU.bat (or run.sh) joins a public lobby. Every Local Wireless room appears in the Rooms List of players with the same game version, with no hosting or port forwarding. Lobby codes make a lobby private to friends.
  • Direct connections: players in an online room connect straight to each other where their routers allow it, with the lobby as the fallback. Put off in online_direct.txt to keep your address private.
  • Controllers: up to eight players on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and most other pads (SDL3 on Windows, SDL2 on Linux). controllers.ini sets the keyboard's player, remaps, rumble and dead zones.
  • Display options: display.ini sets windowed, borderless or fullscreen, the window size, and pacing for VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) monitors. The picture stays 16:9. F11 or Alt+Enter toggles full screen.
  • Shaders: on Windows, shaders the game has already used are made ready at start-up. Prepare Shaders.bat compiles all of a version's shaders ahead of time, so new effects no longer show a moment late.
  • Problem reports: a crash or a freeze (no picture for 5 s) writes a report into reports\, with a minidump on Windows. SSBU_HITCH=<ms> logs slow frames.

Status

This is a prerelease. The unit tests (18) and lobby tests (44) pass, and the runtime compiles for Windows and Linux. These are not yet verified: direct connections across two real networks, the new features on a real Linux machine, and complete matches across every fighter and stage. Direct connections need a lobby running this version's tools/ssbu_relay.py. With an older lobby, play goes through the lobby as before.

@SNO2207 SNO2207 released this 18 Oct 00:52

Runtime package withdrawn

The Windows runtime package that was attached to this release has been removed. It held a prebuilt game executable, and WindowSmash ships only its own source code: the game is built on your PC, from your own copy.

How to play now

  1. Download the latest WindowSmash from the main page (Code → Download ZIP) and extract it.
  2. Double-click Install WindowSmash.bat. It installs the tools it needs, finds your game files, keys and firmware, and builds the game on your PC.
  3. Play with the Play SSBU shortcut on your desktop.

You need your own copy of the game at version 13.0.5. The setup guide covers every step.

If you still have the runtime ZIP or a folder extracted from it, please delete them and don't share them. If you played from that folder, copy its save folder somewhere safe first.
