@OverkillLabs3 OverkillLabs3 released this 11 Oct 12:20

Gears of War: Judgment for PC, v0.2.1

No game data is included; you need your own copy of the retail game.

What's new in v0.2.1

  • Saves load for everyone. Fixed "your saves are corrupted" and Continue starting from the beginning on a
fresh install. The game asked who created the save, and the answer was missing on a first run, so it never read
the file. Saves written by v0.2.0 are fine and now load.
  • Play in your language. Graphics Settings > Game language lists every language that came with the game
files: English, French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian and
Finnish. Menus, subtitles and the keyboard prompts follow the language. These are the languages on the disc this port
was made from. German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese were not on it, so we could not test or offer
them; another release of the game may include them.
  • 1440p is back, experimental. Re-added due to player demand. Graphics Settings > Internal resolution has a
1440p choice again. It is very demanding (see the notes below); 720p stays the default.
  • Resizable settings window. Drag any edge or corner, wider or taller.

Download

  • GearsOfWarJudgment-PC-v0.2.1.zip: unzip to a writable folder, run GearsOfWarJudgment.exe, pick your game
    folder the first time.
  • Graphics Settings.exe changes the settings. It has a Play button.
  • Updating from v0.2.0: replace the two exe files. Your config and saves folders keep working.

Notes on the new options

  • Game language takes effect the next time the game starts. Czech, Hungarian, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian and Finnish
have no console language id, so the game picks them from the country; the settings window sets both
(user_language and user_country in config/gowj.toml). Spanish is the Latin American text on the disc.
  • 1440p (Graphics Settings > Internal resolution) looks sharper and is experimental and very demanding: it needs
a fast graphics card and can drop below 60 fps in heavy scenes. 720p stays the default. It is
draw_resolution_scale_x/y = 2; the Auto quality level never picks it.

Carried over from v0.2.0

  • Real keyboard and mouse controls with rebinding, keyboard prompts, menus on keyboard.
  • Draw distance setting, a lighter Low level, and an Auto quality that shortens draw distance first.
  • Field of view, camera shake switch, skip the logo movie, sharper textures.
  • Fixed the game closing at startup.

For developers

  • The save fix is in src/gowj_content_probe.cpp (the content call that reports the save's creator).
  • DLSS and FSR 3.1/4 upscaling code is still in the repository but switched off (see kTemporalUpscalers in
    src/gowj_quality.h).

Known issues

  • Only the early campaign has been tested. Multiplayer and online features do not work.
  • Tested only on an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti. AMD, Intel and handheld graphics are untested.
  • 1440p is demanding and can show small visual glitches; 720p is the tested setting.
  • A few in-game hint icons still show controller buttons.
  • The game is limited by the processor: expect roughly 90 to 130 fps unlocked on a fast PC at 720p.
  • The first minutes can stutter while shaders build.

@OverkillLabs3 OverkillLabs3 released this 11 Oct 00:24

Gears of War: Judgment for PC, v0.2.0

No game data is included; you need your own copy of the retail game.

What's new

  • Real keyboard and mouse controls. Rebind every key, see keyboard prompts in menus and tips.
  • Faster on slow PCs. A draw distance setting, a lighter Low level, and Auto quality that shortens draw distance first.
  • Fixed the game closing at startup, which happened about one launch in six.
  • More options: field of view, camera shake, skip the logo movie, sharper textures.

Download

  • GearsOfWarJudgment-PC-v0.2.0.zip: unzip to a writable folder, run GearsOfWarJudgment.exe, pick your game
    folder the first time.
  • Graphics Settings.exe changes the settings. It has a Play button.

Keyboard and mouse

  • Keys and mouse go into the game's own controls, and the game switches between keyboard and controller as you
use them, so rumble and controller hints stay with the controller.
  • Menus work with Enter or Space to accept, Backspace to go back, the arrow keys to move, and Esc for Start.
  • Rebind every action in Graphics Settings > Key bindings (click, press the key; right-click adds a second).
    Or edit config/gowj.toml, for example bind_reload = "R".
  • Keyboard names in menus and loading tips ([Enter], [Esc]), or controller names if you use one. Menu prompts
set to Auto follow the device you used last session (keyboard and mouse by default), not just whether a
controller is plugged in; the hints during play switch the moment you change device.
  • Mouse-friendly camera: no automatic pitch re-centring, no engine mouse smoothing, no on-screen debug messages.
  • Defaults: WASD, Space (cover, vault, roll, sprint), E (pick up, revive), Ctrl or C (crouch), F or V (melee,
    execute), R (reload), T (zoom), 1 or wheel (swap weapons), 2 (grenade), 3 and 4, Q, H, Z (walk).

Faster on slow PCs

  • Draw distance setting (Short, Normal, Far). Low draws half as far and Medium three quarters.
In our test street Low went from 104 to 134 fps.
  • Lighter Low level: fewer dynamic lights and shadows, decals, bloom and depth of field.
Medium and High never lose effects, and your game folder is never changed.
  • Smarter Auto quality: if 60 fps is not held, Auto now shortens the draw distance first (up to two steps)
and only then lowers the quality level.
  • v0.1.0 was limited by the processor at about 90 to 110 fps unlocked on a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Slower processors
gain the most from these changes.

More options

  • Field of view slider.
  • Switch for the roadie-run camera shake.
  • Skip the startup logo movie.
  • Sharper textures on Medium and High (trilinear filtering, larger texture pool).
  • The Graphics Settings window is resizable and has new sections for all of the above. The "lighter game
settings" switch only shows while the Low level is selected.

Stability

  • Fixed the game closing while starting, about one launch in six.
  • Menus work with the new keyboard controls, and the "using a gamepad" flag no longer flips on and off
while you play on keyboard and mouse (it made prompts flicker).
  • Crash reports (gowj_crash.log) now include the registers and the failing instruction.

For developers

  • The GPU plugin is built from source here (scripts\build-gpu.ps1).
  • Optional profile-guided optimisation of the game code (GOWJ_PGO).
  • DLSS and FSR 3.1/4 upscaling code is still in the repository but switched off for this release (see
    kTemporalUpscalers in src/gowj_quality.h).

Known issues

  • Only the early campaign has been tested. Multiplayer and online features do not work.
  • Tested only on an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti. AMD, Intel and handheld graphics are untested.
  • DLSS and FSR 3.1/4 upscaling is not in this release. It flickered textures while moving, so it is paused.
  • A few in-game hint icons still show controller buttons.
  • The game renders at 720p on every quality level, scaled to your screen with the older FSR 1 and SMAA options.
1440p was removed because it was too heavy for most PCs.
  • The game is limited by the processor: expect roughly 90 to 130 fps unlocked on a fast PC.
  • The first minutes can stutter while shaders build.

@OverkillLabs3 OverkillLabs3 released this 05 Oct 12:06

Gears of War: Judgment for PC, v0.1.0

First public release. A native Windows build of the Xbox 360 game, made by statically recompiling its
code. No game data is included; you need your own copy of the retail game (title ID 4D530A26).

Download

GearsOfWarJudgment-PC-v0.1.0.zip contains two programs and nothing else to install:

  • GearsOfWarJudgment.exe: the game, one self-contained file
  • Graphics Settings.exe: quality, resolution, filtering, anti-aliasing, FSR, frame limit and mouse settings

Unzip to a writable folder, double-click GearsOfWarJudgment.exe, and pick your game folder the first time.
Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

What is in this release

  • Keyboard and mouse play with raw mouse look, mouse-driven menus, controller support
  • Frame limiter (default 60), full unlock, F9 fps counter, F8 limiter toggle
  • F4 in-game settings menu and a separate settings window with Low / Medium / High / Auto quality levels
  • SMAA and FSR 1.0 upscaling and sharpening, 16x texture filtering, 1x or 2x internal resolution (2x is 2560x1440)
  • Fixes: save games, motion blur removal, film grain and FXAA options, shader pipeline cache (no compile stutter after the first run)
  • Full controls table in the README

Known issues

  • Only the early part of the campaign has been tested. Multiplayer and online features do not work.
  • Tested only on an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti with Windows 11. AMD, Intel and handheld GPUs are untested.
  • CPU limited: about 90 to 110 fps unlocked on a Ryzen 7 5800X3D; a slower CPU gives less.
  • For an unlocked frame rate, set Frame limit to Unlocked in Graphics Settings.exe. F8 in game does not turn off vsync, so it may stay at half your monitor's refresh rate.
  • Unlocked can stutter or tear without a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor. Use the 60 fps limit if so.
  • Small hitches in busy scenes, about one frame in 200.
  • Internal resolution above 2x is not supported.
  • Shaders and pipelines are built on the first run, so the first minutes can be less smooth.
