Editing Toolbar Plugin Advanced Guide

Editing Toolbar is a highly customizable Obsidian plugin that mimics Microsoft Word's toolbar functionality. The recent 3.x rebuild introduced significant upgrades. This guide covers advanced usage.

Installation & Setup

Installation Steps

1. Launch Obsidian
2. Click the gear icon → Settings
3. Navigate to Community plugins
4. Disable Safe mode if enabled
5. Click Browse → Search "Editing Toolbar"
6. Click Install
7. Enable the plugin

Note

Chinese users can install via PKMer Market

Important

For users upgrading from older versions:

1. Run command repair (wrench icon in settings)
2. Restart Obsidian to ensure full functionality

Verification

After installation, you should see the default toolbar with basic formatting buttons (bold, italic etc.). If not:

1. Confirm Obsidian ≥ v1.5.0
2. Check plugin is enabled
3. Try restarting Obsidian

Core Features

Toolbar Positioning

Three display modes:

1. Top Mode
   • Fixed at editor top
   • Traditional word processor style
2. Following Mode
   • Dynamically positions near cursor
   • Auto-avoids screen edges
3. Fixed Mode
   • Anchored at editor bottom
   • Clean interface option

Configure via:
Settings > Editing Toolbar > Toolbar Position

View Control

Manage toolbar visibility per view type (Canvas, Excalidraw, etc.):

1. Click toolbar icon in status bar
2. Choose Current View for individual control
3. Or use Manage All View Types for bulk settings

Multiple Configurations

Create independent setups for:

• Main toolbar (Top)
• Contextual toolbar (Following)
• Mobile layout
• Fixed position

Setup:

1. Enable Multiple Configurations
2. Customize commands per configuration
3. Adjust button order

Key features:

• Clear Config: Reset current setup
• Import Commands: Transfer presets between configs (e.g. default buttons)

Advanced Features

Markdown Format Painter

How to use:

1. Select formatted text (e.g. bold text)
2. Click brush icon
3. Highlight target text to apply formatting
4. Right-click to exit

Supported formats:

• Basic styling (bold/italic)
• Headings
• Text/background colors
• Callouts

Callout Formatting

• Automatically detects callout types (note, warning, tip etc.)
• Quickly apply styles to other text

Theme Customization

Options:

1. Default: Syncs with Obsidian theme
2. Tiny: Minimalist icons
3. Glass: Frosted glass effect

Customize:

• Icon colors
• Background opacity

Configuration Management

Import/Export

Export options:

1. Full settings
2. Just command sets

Import strategies:

• Merge: Keep existing + add new
• Overwrite: Replace all settings

Caution

To restore defaults:
Plugin Settings → Wrench Icon → "Restore Defaults"

Customization

Custom Commands

Create text formatting rules with:

• Command ID: Unique identifier (no spaces)
• Prefix/Suffix: Wraps selected text
• Icon: Custom button image

Custom Regex Command

Powerful pattern matching with:

• Preset templates
• Live preview
• Flags:
  • Global replace
  • Case-insensitive
  • Multiline mode

Example - Date Reformating:

Pattern: (\d{4})-(\d{2})-(\d{2})
Replacement: Year: $1, Month: $2, Day: $3
Input: 2023-10-05 → Output: Year: 2023, Month: 10, Day: 05

How to add a submenu to the Toolbar? (3.1.18)
I want to arrange some items new and have less in the toolbar.

I can't confirm that it's is the same on desktop or iPhone but on android when you go to the "⌘" icon (where you edit your layout) you should see on each item that is already on your current toolbar a little button that looks like a piece of paper with a plus sign in the middle of it & it's right corner folded over. Click on that & it should create a sub menu thing for you to drag & drop whatever you fancy. As seen below. Hopefully it works on whatever you use.
