📑 What is Universal Share?

Universal Share is a lightweight utility that allows you to send and receive files between devices (Android, Windows, macOS, iOS) over your local Wi-Fi.

Key Technical Pillars:

  • mDNS Discovery: Devices find each other automatically—no manual IP entry required.
  • P2P Encryption: Every transfer is secured via high-grade TLS (HTTPS) using on-device generated certificates.
  • Direct Streaming: Uses multi-threaded streaming to maximize your Wi-Fi bandwidth, supporting files of any size.
  • SHA-256 Validation: Guaranteed file integrity with automatic checksum verification.

🛠 How it Works (Under the Hood)

The app operates on a peer-to-peer (P2P) model:

  1. Announcement: When the app opens, it starts a local "Transfer Server" and announces itself to the network.
  2. Handshake: When you select a device, the two apps exchange a secure handshake. If a device is not "Trusted," a PIN or confirmation prompt is shown.
  3. Transmission: Files are broken into chunks and streamed directly from the sender's disk to the receiver's disk.
  4. Completion: On Android, the app automatically places the received files in the system /Download folder for immediate access.

📥 Installation Guide

Android (.apk)

  1. Locate app-release.apk in this package.
  2. Transfer it to your phone and tap to install.
    • Note: You may need to enable "Install from Unknown Sources" in your settings.
  3. Open the app and grant Nearby Devices and File Storage permissions to enable discovery and saving.

Windows (.exe / .iss)

  1. Run the provided Windows installer.
  2. The setup will automatically register the application and ensure the Windows Firewall allows local network traffic.
  3. Once installed, you can launch the app from the Start Menu.

⚠️ Requirements

  • Network: Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi or Local Area Network (LAN).
  • Firewall: Ensure that "Local Network Discovery" is permitted if prompted by your OS.
  • No Internet Required: This app does not send your data to the internet; it stays entirely within your home or office network.
