PanPlay Everlasting: Peak Bootstrap

image

PanPlay 0.1.1.0 Everlasting [Build 1030] is the final major release of the long-running Bootstrap-based PanPlay generation.

Everlasting is not the end of PanPlay. It is the point where the current interface becomes a feature-frozen, long-term supported beta while work on the next generation begins.

This release is our “Peak Bootstrap”: one final substantial refinement of the player, its extensions, themes, localization, playback integration, and internal reliability.

Rollout note: The release is available through GitHub and the PanPlay CDN now. The larger website announcement will follow after several days of real-world testing.

PanPlay CPM

Everlasting introduces the PanPlay Content Protection Mechanism for the Baseaudio extension.

CPM allows a PanPlay instance to refuse playback of audio URLs that match local or centrally maintained filter rules. It is intended to help instance operators respond to copyright complaints and takedown requests without turning PanPlay into an active surveillance or reporting system.

CPM is not DRM, does not remove the original file, does not accuse the listener of wrongdoing, and does not report playback URLs to authorities or Pangom.

Local operators can maintain their own filter list. Optional CPM by CDN synchronizes and caches a central PanPlay list from play.pangom.net. Matching still happens locally: normal playback URLs are not sent to the PanPlay service.

When content is blocked, PanPlay stops before the player interface is rendered and displays a localized 403 Bluescreen. Self-hosted operators can disable the central list and use only their own rules.

image ## Baseaudio, Finally Completed

The Baseaudio extension has existed since the earliest PanPlay versions, but its interface and metadata handling remained unfinished for years. Everlasting gives it its first substantial rebuild.

PanPlay now uses getID3 to inspect supported audio files and can display available title, artist, album, genre, year, duration, format, codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, file size, and embedded artwork.

The normalized metadata is also reused for the Media Session API, Google Cast metadata, Open Graph information, and the new audio-details interface.

Remote analysis is deliberately restricted. PanPlay validates remote hosts and redirects, blocks private or reserved destinations, and applies limits to downloads, redirects, artwork, and caches. Metadata remains optional: unsupported files, direct streams, oversized files, and failed analyses can still play using the original URL information.

The old prerelease background has also been replaced with a new neutral, aurora-inspired playback background.

Connected Player Settings

The settings interface now controls user-facing URL and session parameters for languages, themes, and extension behavior.

Changes are collected and applied together instead of reloading the player after every selection. Extension-specific settings, Baseaudio URL handling, laut.fm window controls, and a read-only CPM status panel are integrated.

This is intentionally not a server administration panel. Instance configuration and protected server settings remain under the control of the operator.

Eleven Interface Themes

Everlasting contains eleven selectable themes:

  • Default PanPlay
  • Liquid Glass
  • Aero
  • Mac OS X Aqua
  • Windows XP Luna
  • Windows 9x
  • Deepin
  • Cosmo
  • Light
  • High Contrast Dark
  • laut.fm

Liquid Glass substantially expands the previous Glass theme while retaining the existing internal glass parameter. Aero was refined toward the appearance of Windows 7 and Windows Media Player 11/12. Aqua, Luna, and Deepin add entirely new visual interpretations.

Existing themes received broad repairs covering contrast, modal headers and footers, close controls, backgrounds, tags, buttons, Google Cast controls, and responsive layouts.

laut.fm Improvements

Programme entries in the schedule can now reveal descriptions supplied by the laut.fm API. The currently running programme is highlighted and can be opened directly from the main player interface.

API-defined playlist colors remain intact, empty data is omitted, and the schedule, station information, title history, current-song view, and player-switching dialogs received cross-theme repairs.

Reliability And Localization

All 54 core and extension language files were reviewed with strict UTF-8 handling and integrity checks.

Everlasting also improves network-error handling, localized Bluescreens, browser compatibility checks, legal-document configuration, early initialization, Google Cast fallback behavior, and centralized instance configuration through data/storage.php.

Optional services such as Cast and metadata analysis no longer prevent normal local playback when they are unavailable.

Why Bootstrap Stops Here

PanPlay has accumulated many years of Bootstrap adaptations, custom themes, additional CSS layers, and special cases. The result still works surprisingly well, and Everlasting is intended to preserve its best possible form.

However, adding another architectural generation on top of these layers would make future development increasingly difficult. The Bootstrap interface is therefore feature-frozen after this release.

Everlasting may continue to receive focused maintenance builds for security issues, browser or service compatibility, and serious playback or interface regressions. It is intended to remain usable while its successor is developed.

The Next PanPlay Generation

The planned successor will explore the Pangom Web Framework: a Tailwind-based application framework that originated inside ONA Monitor.

The framework is currently integrated directly into ONA Monitor. It is not yet a standalone package, is not part of this PanPlay release, and has not yet been published as an open-source project.

Before PanPlay can depend on it, the framework must be separated from ONA Monitor, given stable boundaries and documentation, and evaluated as an independent project. Publishing that extracted framework on GitHub is being considered before development of the new PanPlay interface begins.

The intended direction is a player with dynamic sections such as Player, Title History, Schedule, Station Information, Settings, and About. Content should change without restarting the audio stream. Extension manifests, cleaner ownership boundaries, improved PWA support, and an interface without Bootstrap are also planned.

These are development goals, not promises of a release date or a finalized architecture.

Everlasting is both a farewell to the current interface and the most complete version of it. Thank you for using, testing, and following PanPlay.
