Navigator Gen3 v0.3.0-beta

@Pavanayi1 Pavanayi1 released this 19 Jul 06:38

Navigator Gen3 v0.3.0-beta — the auto-reconnect fix + a real handlebar controller.

Headline fixes

  • Silent auto-reconnect (the #1 issue) is FIXED. After you cycle the ignition off and on, the app now relinks on its own in about a second, with no "add device" prompt on the dash. It remembers your pairing keys and re-presents them; those keys now survive app updates, reinstalls and even a new phone. Verified live on a KTM 390 Adventure across repeated ignition cycles.
  • Automatic bike detection — on connect it reads the dash model/firmware and shows the detected type (e.g. "Navigator Gen 3 (BCCU)") in the connection banner. Non-Gen-3 dashes now report clearly instead of hanging on "handshaking".

The handlebar remote is now a proper controller

Long-press UP (from any screen) opens the mode picker: Controller / Music / Bike (off). "Bike (off)" hands the buttons back to the dash.

How to use it

  • Controller mode (a D-pad for your phone):
    • UP / DOWN — move up / down
    • SET (single tap) — right · BACK (single tap) — left
    • SET double-click — open / select the highlighted item (reliably opens apps now)
    • SET long-press — long-press the item (context menus / shortcuts)
    • BACK double-click — back
  • Music mode:
    • UP / DOWN (single) — volume up / down
    • UP / DOWN (double-click) — next / previous track
    • SET — play / pause
  • Long-press DOWN — open Google Maps, from anywhere.

Every press is read on release, and the app cleanly tells a tap, a double-click and a press-and-hold apart (tuned from real measurements on the bike).

On the dash

  • Now-playing track scrolls across the bottom bar once when the song changes (e.g. "Adventure Of A Lifetime by Coldplay").
  • Cleaner messages — mirrored notifications are stripped of emoji/symbols the dash font can't render.

Other

  • App package renamed to com.navigator.app. Installing this is a one-time fresh start — pair once and re-grant the notification + accessibility permissions, then it's the app going forward. (You can uninstall any older com.opendash.app build afterward.)

Known / in progress

  • Full vehicle telemetry (voltage, gear, coolant temp, wheel speed, fuel) — the dash's telemetry service is present but currently rejects our requests; being investigated.
  • Older "MY RIDE" KTMs need a separate connection path (planned).

Navigator Gen3 v0.2.0-beta (formerly OpenDash)

A large update over the first release (v0.1.0), and a beta - expect a few rough edges, and please send logs if something misbehaves.

About the name
The app is now called Navigator Gen3 (it was OpenDash at v0.1.0). The old name overlapped with existing projects. Thanks to u/SubtleAsFucc for flagging it early. Same app, same maintainer, same on-device, no-account approach - just a clearer name.

New since v0.1.0

Husqvarna support (new). The big one. v0.1.0 was KTM only. Navigator Gen3 now also works with Husqvarna Gen-3 models, which share the same dash electronics. The app themes itself to match your bike - KTM in dark orange, Husqvarna in a lighter blue - picked on first run and switchable from Settings.

Sound.

  • Stereo turn-approach beeps: left ear for a left turn, right ear for a right turn, tempo tightening as you near the corner.
  • Beeps drop to a quiet hum when you are stopped and return when you move off.
  • Adjustable volume, a mellower tone, and a left/right channel swap.
  • A much louder overspeed alarm - plays on the alarm channel at full volume, sounds through Do Not Disturb.
  • Preview the beeps and the overspeed alarm from Settings.

Ride recording and viewer (GPX).

  • Optional automatic GPX ride recording, power-aware (full detail on the charger, gentle on battery, can be turned off).
  • A Rides screen that draws each ride coloured by speed, with a speed-over-time graph and stats.
  • A rough traffic readout: stopped with the engine running counts as traffic; engine off is treated as an intentional stop.
  • Open .gpx files from other apps, and share your recorded rides.

Engine detection. The app can tell whether the engine is running from the phone's motion sensor, after a short guided calibration. This drives the beep ducking and the traffic readout.

Handlebar remote and notifications.

  • Selectable remote modes (media, phone gamepad, or the app's menu), switched with a triple-press of Up; more reliable gamepad highlighting.
  • Group chats and summary notifications are filtered out, so only real messages reach the dash.
  • The persistent notification has an Exit action that genuinely stops the app.

Reconnection. Reworked to wait for the dash to finish waking after ignition-on, then back off instead of hammering the link. Better, but not fully solved - see below.

Setup and stability. Reworked first-run walkthrough with "skip all"; paired bike and brand choice now survive app updates.

Turn icons. Recognition works as in v0.1.0 (same model); the training dataset is now in the repo for anyone who wants to improve it.

Known issues

  1. Bluetooth auto-connect is not working reliably. After you cycle the ignition off and on, the app does not silently reconnect on its own. When it does reconnect, you currently have to accept the connection on the bike's dash each time. This is the top thing being worked on.
  2. First pairing still needs the physical "add device" confirmation on the dash. Expected, once per bike.
  3. Turn-icon accuracy depends on your Google Maps version and your dash - use the Symbol Test and Turn-icon Calibration screens if an icon looks wrong.
  4. Husqvarna support has not yet been verified on a physical Husqvarna. It should work on the shared dash protocol, but testing so far has only been on a KTM.
  5. Engine detection needs calibration and varies by phone and mount.
  6. This is a beta - if anything crashes or misbehaves, please open an issue or share your logs.

Install
Download the APK below, copy it to your phone, and open it (allow install from unknown sources). First pairing needs the "add device" confirm on the dash. Installs over an existing install.

Unofficial hobby project, not affiliated with or endorsed by KTM or Husqvarna. Provided as-is. Ride responsibly and do not operate your phone while riding.

Google Maps turn-by-turn on the KTM Gen-3 dash with on-device AI turn-icon recognition; notification mirroring; handlebar gamepad. Known issue: auto-reconnect after ignition off/on is buggy (help wanted). Privacy: no data collected, nothing saved, everything on-device. Sideload the APK; first pairing needs the physical confirm on the dash.
