SIPNET 2.2.0-alpha.1 — Carbon and Nitrogen in Sync preview

This release improves SIPNET’s carbon and nitrogen accounting and adds interactive tools for exploring model outputs and internal debug logs.

Highlights include:

  • More consistent plant carbon allocation and nitrogen accounting (#359).
  • Nitrogen resorption during leaf senescence and biomass loss, with a nitrogen storage pool used before fixation and uptake (#337, #359).
  • Plant mortality detection, including transfer of remaining biomass to litter and soil pools (#359).
  • Leaf-on growth limited by both carbon and nitrogen availability (#337).
  • Optional soil carbon saturation (#301).
  • New interactive viewers for model output and internal debug logs (#317, #352, #357).
  • Improved event reporting and clearer file-prefix configuration (#349, #320).

When upgrading:

  • events.out now reports pool changes rather than flux rates.
  • Existing parameter files require leafOnReallocFrac;
  • runs with the nitrogen cycle enabled also require plantStorageNInit and leafNResorptionFrac. When site-specific values are unavailable, suggested starting values are plantStorageNInit 0.0 and leafNResorptionFrac 0.5.
  • Restart checkpoints written by v2.1 are not compatible.
  • Parameters calibrated with earlier versions of SIPNET must be revalidated before scientific use and may require recalibration because the accounting changes can affect simulated biomass and carbon and nitrogen fluxes.
