Third pre-release
Pre-releaseHere's a new and improved alpha release of the Scribe Evolution firmware.
Changelog
- Thread-Safe Architecture - All shared resources (LogManager, APIClient, ConfigManager, MQTTManager, PrinterManager, LEDEffects) now use singleton + mutex pattern with RAII locks
- MQTT Overhaul - Switched to ESP32MQTTClient library (non-blocking FreeRTOS tasks), fixes C3 watchdog timeouts, new scribe-evolution topic namespace
- Multi-Board System - Complete board configuration with auto-detection, board-specific GPIO mappings, ESP32-S3-mini support added alongside ESP32-C3 (plus initial custom PCB support for ESP-S3 8mb)
- Memory Optimization - Unified content handler, heap fragmentation fixes, serial-only logging (critical for C3 stability)
- ESP32-C3 Stability - FastLED initialization fixes, proper RMT configuration, SSL socket closure fixes
- JSON Standardization - Upgrade to ArduinoJson v7, all JS keys migrated to camelCase, added printerId to all printer objects,
- Network Enhancements - mDNS conflict resolution, watchdog resets for network/MQTT operations
- Board GPIO Migration - All board pins moved to board config system, runtime mismatch detection, removed hardcoded values
- Logging Refactor - Consistent formatting across modules, better boot messages
Note: fairly sure that on this build, setting MQTT to invalid credentials will crash the board. Correct MQTT credentials should save OK. Fixed in next release.
Core features like printing, a mobile-friendly web interface, and remote printing across devices are in place and ready to explore. This release is still experimental. Flash it and see what you think?
Tested and working, separately, on C3 Supermini and S3 Supermini. Also created a firmware for s3-custom-pcb but this is untested.
Step 1: Erase flash
esptool --port /dev/cu.usbmodem1101 erase-flash
Step 2: Flash firmware
esptool --port /dev/cu.usbmodem1101 --baud 460800 write-flash 0x0 scribe-s3-4mb-prod-complete.bin
Step 3: setup
Your Scribe Evolution will start a wifi network "Scribe-setup" with password "scribe123". Connect to it and navigate to http://192.168.4.1 to access the setup screen if it doesn't appear automatically.
If you run into problems with this release, try the previous one.
Please report bugs, ask questions, and share suggestions. Your feedback drives the next steps.
