v0.1.1 - documentation and starter template bundled in the package

Choose a tag to compare

@PieterCooreman PieterCooreman released this 17 Aug 15:14

pip install asppy now delivers everything needed to actually build something -
the runtime, the full documentation set, and the MVC starter template.

The problem this release fixes

0.1.0 shipped the runtime but none of the material needed to learn it.
developers.md, the prompt builders and the docs were repository-only, so
anyone who installed from PyPI - a person or an AI agent - had no way to
discover how ASPPY works. ASPPY is newer than every LLM's training cut-off, so
a model asked to build an ASPPY app had nothing to go on and invented APIs that
don't exist.

A runtime nobody can learn is not a usable runtime.

What's new

The documentation ships inside the package. 20 documents, offline, no
download: developers.md, README.md, both prompt builders, The Vibe Coder's
Guide, specifications.html and the full reference set.

Two new commands:

Command What it does
asppy-guide Print developers.md to stdout - pipe it straight into an AI agent's context
asppy-guide --list List every bundled document
asppy-guide --open prompt-builder Open a prompt builder in your browser, offline
asppy-new myapp Scaffold a runnable MVC app from the starter template

Zero to running app from a bare install:

pip install asppy
asppy-new myapp
asppy 127.0.0.1 8080 myapp

Getting an AI agent up to speed. Run asppy-guide and give the agent its
output before asking for any ASP. For browser chat assistants that cannot read
your disk, use asppy-guide | clip and paste, or use a prompt builder.

Fixes

  • asppy-check reported phantom failures on www_starter. The folder the
guide tells everyone to start from produced 3 failures and exit code 1,
because include-only view fragments cannot render standalone. An agent
following the guide would have chased bugs in working code. views,
partials and layouts are now excluded by default, as includes already
was. Use --no-default-excludes to scan them anyway.
  • Version drift. The version was declared in both pyproject.toml and
    ASPPY/__init__.py; a 0.1.1 build reported itself as 0.1.0.
ASPPY.__version__ is now the single source of truth.
  • developers.md assumed a git checkout throughout. It now opens with a
preamble mapping every checkout path and command to its pip equivalent, so
the guidance is correct for both audiences.

Notes

  • The core runtime still has zero required dependencies - standard library
only, with SQLite working out of the box. Optional extras: pdf, image,
    crypto, odbc, xml, all.
  • Requires Python 3.9 or newer.
  • Wheel is 433 KB, up from 247 KB. Screenshots are deliberately not bundled;
the README references them by absolute URL.
  • tools/sync_guides.py mirrors docs/ and www_starter/ into the package,
because docs/ must stay at the repository root for GitHub Pages. Run
    python tools/sync_guides.py --check before releasing.
  • 0.1.0 is superseded and should be considered unusable for AI-assisted work.
