Saber 1.1.1

@Platinum-Saber Platinum-Saber released this 16 Oct 15:46

Saber 1.1.1 gives Saber a voice. She reads out what needs your attention (Moodle deadlines, important Gmail, deliveries, today's events, missed calls) in a calm, sage-like voice. Everything runs on the phone.

All of the code was written by Claude (Anthropic's AI model, via Claude Code). Platinum-Saber provided the design decisions, reviewed and approved every plan, and tested on a Galaxy S23.

New

  • Saber's briefing: turn it on in Settings → Briefing. It is off by default.
    • Tap her cloud and she reads the briefing aloud, with her mouth moving. The cloud lists it too.
    • Sources: Moodle deadlines in the next 3 days (by module name), today's calendar events, missed calls, and Gmail notifications. There is no Gmail sign-in.
    • Unasked, she only announces new urgent items, once each, and only on a visible Home between 07:00 and 22:00. She stays quiet when the ringer is off, Do Not Disturb is on, music is playing or the screen is being recorded.
  • On-device voice: Kokoro (bf_emma) through sherpa-onnx. Samsung TTS speaks until the voice is downloaded.
  • On-device mail labeller: Gemma 4 E2B runs on the GPU (LiteRT-LM) and sorts each mail into Urgent, Reply, Delivery (with the item and ETA), Bill, Promo or Info. Sender names are spoken, never addresses.
  • Model downloads in the app: Settings → Briefing → Voice (132 MB) and On-device model (2.6 GB). Downloads can be cancelled, resumed and deleted, and run on Wi-Fi only unless you allow mobile data.
  • Separate process: all model work runs in its own :brain process, so Home never loads either model.

Fixed

  • The glass pill is now grabbed only from a small patch centred under it, so Home icons beside it stay tappable.
  • Settings → Briefing → Modules starts collapsed and opens when you tap it.

Performance and security

  • Performance (S23, optimised build, briefing on, 12 page swipes, three runs):
    • 1.2–1.4% janky frames (1.6–2.0% in 1.0.1).
    • Frame time p50 5 ms, p90 6–7 ms. GPU 3 ms.
    • While she idles, the Home window draws 0 frames. :brain uses about 77 MB with no model loaded.
    • On the S23, Gemma loads in about 13 s and labels a mail in 1–2 s. The voice loads in about 1.6 s.
  • Security:
    • New permissions: call log (asked from Settings, never at startup), internet and a dataSync foreground service (both for the model downloads), and audio settings (for her reverb). There are no new exported components.
    • Network: HTTPS only, system CAs only. The model URLs are fixed, a redirect off HTTPS is refused, and a model is used only if its size and pinned SHA-256 match. When the voice archive is unpacked, any entry that would land outside its folder is refused, and links are skipped. Moodle is HTTPS-only. The password is sent once by POST, and only the token is kept.
    • Briefing data, the token, the clips and the models live in no_backup storage, so they are never backed up. Turning the briefing off deletes the briefing data, the token and the clips.
    • Details: docs/security.md.
  • arm64 only. The APK is about 59 MB because it carries the on-device voice and model runtimes. The models themselves are downloaded separately.

Install

  1. Download Saber-1.1.1.apk below and install it over 1.0.x. If you installed a debug build before, uninstall it first: the signatures differ.
  2. Choose Saber as the default home app.
  3. For the briefing: open Settings → Briefing, turn it on, download the voice and the model, and optionally connect Moodle and allow the call log.
  4. Optional: install Saber-Icons-1.1.1.apk for other launchers or One UI's Theme Park.

Saber 1.0.0

@Platinum-Saber Platinum-Saber released this 10 Oct 19:47

The first release of Saber, a liquid-glass Android home-screen launcher with an interactive Saber mascot.

All of the code was written by Claude (Anthropic's AI model, via Claude Code). Platinum-Saber provided the design decisions and architecture rules, and reviewed and approved every plan.

Highlights

  • Liquid glass: every surface samples a blurred copy of the wallpaper through its own AGSL shader. You get edge refraction, a rim lit by tilt, and a tint that adapts so text stays readable. Tilt also moves the wallpaper in a parallax effect.
  • Home and drawer: pages, folders, drag and drop and edit mode. The drawer has a suggested-apps row and search across apps, contacts, settings and the web. Double-tap empty space to lock the phone.
  • Widgets:
    • Built in: clock, weather (Open-Meteo), calendar, battery, alarm, and a media widget with a Spotify / VLC switcher and resume.
    • Exported as Glance widgets for other launchers.
  • Wallpapers: Aurora wallpapers, or your own photos with pan and zoom framing.
  • Saber mascot: she stands on the search bar.
    • Poke, pet, drag and throw her. She has idle moments, sleeps, dances to music and follows the phone's tilt.
    • She duels a finger near her and points at one far away.
    • While charging, she stands guard with a glowing gold sword.
    • A glass thought cloud shows unread WhatsApp chats. Tap it to preview, tap a chat to open it, or flick the cloud away to dismiss them.
  • Security:
    • Backups carry only the layout and settings.
    • Message previews hide while the screen is recorded.
    • Network access is HTTPS only, and input from other apps and the network is size-capped.
    • Details: docs/security.md.

Install

  1. Download Saber-1.0.0.apk below and install it. You'll need to allow installs from your browser or file manager.
  2. Choose Saber as the default home app (Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app).
  3. Optional permissions, each asked for from the feature that needs it:
    • location for weather;
    • calendar;
    • contacts for search;
    • notification access for the media widget and the message cloud;
    • the accessibility service for double-tap lock.

Requires Android 13 (API 33) or later. Built and tested on a Galaxy S23 (Android 16, One UI 8.5).
