Notes

This update has been tested against Bannerlord v1.3.9. War Sails was not installed, but this is unlikely to impact the mod's functionalities.

The troop editing system has been overhauled. Now you can edit the following for a troop:

  • The "minimum" body properties for a troop
  • The "maximum" body properties for a troop
  • The hair "tags" for a troop
  • The beard "tags" for a troop
  • The tattoo "tags" for a troop
In addition to the renaming mechanism, which remains unchanged.

Editing of tags is an advanced features. More on that in the next section.

How Bannerlord Generates Troops

The game appears to generate troops using a combination of body properties and hair/beard/tattoo tags. The range of body properties (the "minimum" and the "maximum") determines the possible looks a troop can have, without any hard/beard/tattoo whatsoever. In other words, the hair/bear/tattoo part of the body properties are entirely ignored. Instead, the troop is assigned hair/beard/tattoo based on the tags it is given, with each tag separated by a comma (,). This appears to be a weight-based system, where multiple instances of the same tag increase the probability of it being chosen.

Because of this, controlling what kind of hair/beard/tattoo a troop can have requires editing the tags directly. This does require looking into skin files and manually copying the necessary tags. This makes it an advanced feature as it requires some knowledge of how to read an XML/XSLT file and how to search tags on the user's part.

Generally, the tags are defined in the <style_tags> element within the <hair_mesh>, <beard_mesh>, and <tattoo_material> elements in the skins.xml file, and used in the <hair_tags>, <beard_tags>, and <tattoo_tags> elements with each <BodyProperty> in sandboxcore_bodyproperties.xml.

Changelog

  • Updated for Bannerlord v1.3.9
  • Skin files updated to match changes in v1.3.x
  • Updated assets to work with v1.3.x (apparently it would somehow break teen textures if unchanged)
  • Fixed a crash from attempting to enter character creation the 'old' way (now you have to make sure to enter it as a 'state')
  • Improved unit editing mechanism. Now edited units no longer propagate changes to 'base' units.
  • It is now possible to edit both the minimum or maximum properties of troops. You can still edit both by selecting both.
  • It is now possible to edit hair, beard, and tattoo tags to control how the game generates troops. This is an advanced feature.
  • Improved debug logging.
