What's new

Choose the timestamp format

View → Timestamp Format sets how timestamps are shown in live trace (#5, requested by @klasen):

Format Example
U.S. (default) 09/28/26 14:05:12.345
European 28.09.26 14:05:12.345
European (slashes) 28/09/26 14:05:12.345
ISO 8601 2026-09-28 14:05:12.345
Time only 14:05:12.345

The choice is remembered. Switching also reformats messages already on screen, and Record to File writes the chosen format. Timestamps that are already part of the text, such as in an opened trace file, are shown exactly as written.

What's new

Trace levels up to 100

The trace-level control stopped at 10. A driver traced higher than that was shown as 10, and clicking Apply wrote 10 back to the server without saying so. The REST DriverShim traces at 99, so it always looked like 10 and an Apply click lowered it. The control now goes up to 100, so the level you see is the one on the server, and Apply leaves a high level alone.

An application icon

The window, Dock, and taskbar show an application icon, contributed by @klasen. The macOS app uses the same artwork as its Finder icon.

Copy from the trace view

Right-click in the trace view to copy the selected text (#6, requested by @klasen). The menu's Copy item is enabled when text is selected and puts that selection on the clipboard. Ctrl/Cmd+C works as before.

DirXML Trace Viewer 1.2.0

What's new

Start the viewer already showing something

The launchers and java -jar now take arguments, so another tool can open the viewer on a file or connected to a vault. DirXMLDev's driver.trace view does exactly that.

--open FILE open a trace file
--connect URL|HOST[:PORT] --bind-dn DN connect and stream; URL is ldaps://host:636 or ldap://host:389,
[--search-base BASE] [--driver NAME] a bare host means LDAPS on 636; --driver selects that driver
[--no-legacy-ciphers] once the tree is built
--password-stdin read the bind password from the first line of stdin
--demo synthetic trace, no vault
--help

The password is never an argument: it comes from the DIRXML_TRACE_VIEWER_PASSWORD environment variable or, with --password-stdin, from standard input, so it stays out of process listings and shell history. An untrusted server certificate is still shown for you to accept once; a remembered one connects without asking. With no arguments the viewer behaves as before.

What's new

Server certificates are checked, and you decide about untrusted ones

The "Trust any server certificate" option is gone. LDAPS certificates are now checked the normal way:

  • Certificates issued by a certificate authority Java trusts, and matching the server name or address, connect without asking. Hostname checking is new; it was previously skipped.
  • For anything else (self-signed, an eDirectory tree CA, expired, or issued for another name) the viewer shows why, with the subject, issuer, validity and SHA-256 fingerprint, and asks: Trust and Remember, Trust This Time, or Cancel.
  • Remembered certificates are pinned per server. If a server later presents a different certificate, you are warned and shown both fingerprints.
  • File → Accepted Certificates… lists remembered certificates and removes one or all.

The first time you connect to an eDirectory server with its tree CA certificate, expect one prompt per server.

Signed Mac app

The Mac DMG contains a signed, notarized app with its own Java runtime: no Java install or admin rights needed, and no security warnings.

DirXML Trace Viewer 1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@jcombs-pointblue jcombs-pointblue released this 25 Sep 20:08

Packaging and licensing update. The viewer itself is unchanged from 1.0.0.

Changes

  • Third-party notices included. The jar bundles JLDAP (OpenLDAP Public License 2.0.1) and FlatLaf (Apache License 2.0). Their copyright notices and license texts are now in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt, both in the distribution zip and inside the jar.
  • Correct license in the jar. The jar's META-INF/LICENSE is now this project's MIT license; 1.0.0's jar carried FlatLaf's Apache license there by mistake.
  • README: screenshot updated, licensing section expanded.

Download

File Use
DirXML-Trace-Viewer-1.0.1-arm64.dmg Mac (Apple silicon). Signed and notarized app with its own Java runtime: no Java or admin rights needed. Drag it to Applications, ~/Applications, or any folder.
dirxml-trace-viewer-1.0.1.zip Recommended. The jar, launchers for macOS, Linux and Windows, README, LICENSE and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES
dirxml-trace-viewer.jar The executable jar alone: java -jar dirxml-trace-viewer.jar
SHA256SUMS Checksums for all three

The zip and jar require Java 21 or later. Unzip, then run dirxml-trace-viewer.command (macOS, double-click), dirxml-trace-viewer.sh (macOS/Linux) or dirxml-trace-viewer.bat (Windows). Start with --demo to try it without a server. See the README for details.
