v1.0
Game is now finished! Version 1.0 is now fully out with completed game.
New features and bug fixes
- Game now checks the guess against the wordlist, making sure it's a valid word. It prints out an error if the word cannot be found in the wordlist.
- Improved and optimized annotation, which now works correctly.
- Addition of a new word in the wordlist: SLAVE (this word was for some reason missing, it's not in the original wordlist from the source).
If you have any ideas for missing words for the wordlist (remember, the words have to be 5-letter words), please let me know. I'll add them in the next version.
Technical details
- Magic numbers have been replaced by constants (in other words,
WORD_LENGTHnow defines the length of the word as 5, etc.). - GitHub Copilot has assessed that ultra speed is not a priority anymore, which means conversion to uppercase letters doesn't use bitwise operation anymore.
- Word letter counters have been added for checks, and correct letters at correct spots are checked first, making annotations more accurate.
- Makefile has been adjusted for better release management
How to play
- Extract this ZIP archive anywhere you like.
Make sure the extracted archive includes the wordlist.txt
This file is essential for this game to work! - Run the "wordle" program from the extracted directory.
This is important to load the wordlist.txt file correctly. - Play the game and test your luck. You can use upper case or lower
case letters. All words are 5 letter words, the game picks one
by random. Guessed words are output using upper case lettering. - If you want to play again, run the game executable again.
Editing the word list
- As you may know, there's wordlist.txt file bundled with this game. This file is the list of words that this program can use. This file
can be edited. To edit this file, open it in a text editor and add or remove your words. - You can also add comments to the file. Comment is any line that starts with
#. All words shall be 5-letter words.
Further development ideas
These are the development ideas I have for future versions:
- Create a save file to store a word for the current date and play based on days
- Add new words to the wordlist
- When lost, offer a new game with a new word.
Current version of the game however satisfies my vision of what I wanted to accomplish. Wordlist can be edited very easily, so if you want to add custom words, you can. Words are alphabetically sorted, but they don't need to be.
