Description
Several provinces provide top-up benefits to the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). These are included in SPSD/M but missing from PolicyEngine Canada.
Required Implementation
Provincial GIS top-ups by province:
- Ontario: GAINS (Guaranteed Annual Income System)
- Alberta: Alberta Seniors Benefit
- British Columbia: BC Senior's Supplement
- Saskatchewan: Saskatchewan Income Plan (SIP)
- Manitoba: 55 PLUS Program
Implementation Notes
- Each province has different eligibility criteria
- Benefits are typically for low-income seniors receiving GIS
- Amounts and income thresholds vary by province
- Some include additional benefits (e.g., property tax credits)
Example: Ontario GAINS
- Maximum /month for singles, /month for couples (2024)
- Must be receiving OAS and GIS
- Ontario resident for 12 months
- Income-tested reduction
