Description

Several provinces provide top-up benefits to the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). These are included in SPSD/M but missing from PolicyEngine Canada.

Required Implementation

Provincial GIS top-ups by province:

  • Ontario: GAINS (Guaranteed Annual Income System)
  • Alberta: Alberta Seniors Benefit
  • British Columbia: BC Senior's Supplement
  • Saskatchewan: Saskatchewan Income Plan (SIP)
  • Manitoba: 55 PLUS Program

Implementation Notes

  • Each province has different eligibility criteria
  • Benefits are typically for low-income seniors receiving GIS
  • Amounts and income thresholds vary by province
  • Some include additional benefits (e.g., property tax credits)

Example: Ontario GAINS

  • Maximum /month for singles, /month for couples (2024)
  • Must be receiving OAS and GIS
  • Ontario resident for 12 months
  • Income-tested reduction
