Yabadabadoo 0.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

Hotfix: Yabadabadoo defaults to 1600 MHz instead of 1700 MHz.

The previous default clock speed might have caused black screens and hangups for a Miyoo Mini V4 user. The cause is not precisely confirmed yet, but as a precaution I'm lowering the default clock speed for new installs.

Please reach out if you experience any issues with Yabadabadoo! I will do what I can to fix it.

The core itself is unchanged from 0.2 (RetroArch still shows version 0.2); only the launch script and the README changed.

Install / update

Extract yabadabadoo-0.2.1.zip to the root of the SD card (over 0.1 or 0.2 if you have it). BIOS and games as before.

Updating: if you've ever had a black screen and a frozen Miyoo when starting a game, delete Saves/CurrentProfile/config/Yabadabadoo/cpuclock.txt and install 0.2.1. The next launch creates the file again at 1600 MHz. If Yabadabadoo has always run fine on your device, your clock stays where it is, and you don't need to update.

Changing the clock

The clock is stored in Saves/CurrentProfile/config/Yabadabadoo/cpuclock.txt. Edit that file to change it. Changing the number in launch.sh does nothing once that file exists.

Higher clocks run faster, but some units can't handle them. If your Miyoo freezes, first try turning it off with the power button; on some models this works even when the screen is frozen. Then set a lower value in cpuclock.txt (1200 MHz is the stock clock), try again, and let me know in the Issues tab.

Yabadabadoo 0.2

Choose a tag to compare

The smoothness update. Most games should feel a lot smoother than in 0.1, with fewer glitches, better compatibility and moderate speed gains. Tested on a Miyoo Mini+ with Onion OS.

What's new

Frameskip finally works as intended. Onion's default RetroArch audio driver (OSS) never tells the core how full the sound buffer is, so in 0.1 auto frameskip always skipped as many frames as it was allowed to, even in scenes that could run at full speed. 0.2 switches Yabadabadoo to the SDL audio driver and makes plain "Auto" the default frameskip.

Speed: faster background layers, polygons and screen compositing. Biggest gains in Daytona USA, Sega Rally, NiGHTS, Sakura Wars, Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon.

Fixes:

  • House of the Dead and WipEout no longer get stuck on a black screen (recompiler fixes). WipEout boots but isn't playable yet.
  • Virtua Cop 2 boots, and its sound effects play (Virtua Fighter 2's too).
  • The BIOS of the game's region is used automatically; a new core option picks one by hand.
  • CHD: English Sakura Wars translations no longer go to the BIOS CD player.
  • Virtua Fighter 2's intro FMV no longer flickers.
  • Various smaller fixes.

Install / update

  1. Extract yabadabadoo-0.2.zip to the root of the SD card (over 0.1 if you have it).
  2. Put a Saturn BIOS (sega_101.bin or mpr-17933.bin) in the BIOS folder.
  3. Put your games in Roms/SATURN.

Updating from 0.1: on the first launch, Yabadabadoo's audio driver is switched to SDL and frameskip changes from "Auto (Threshold)" to "Auto". Your other settings, overrides, saves and states are kept, and so is any other frameskip mode you picked; if you change these back later, your choice sticks. If you only copy the .so file, this doesn't happen: set the audio driver to SDL (and save a core override) and frameskip to Auto yourself.

Known issues

  • NiGHTS into Dreams (PAL): the first FMV is black (press Start to skip it).
  • Virtua Fighter 2: slow, and interlace jitter with frameskip.
  • Dragon Force: visual glitches in the startup menus.
  • WipEout: 3D graphics broken, runs poorly.

Bug reports are welcome in the Issues tab: the game and its region, your Miyoo model, OS and clock speed, steps to reproduce, and a save state if you can.

Yabadabadoo 0.1

Choose a tag to compare

First public release of Yabadabadoo, a Sega Saturn core for RetroArch tuned for the Miyoo Mini family on Onion OS. This is an early release: expect bugs, and expect some games to run slowly or not at all. It has only been tested on a Miyoo Mini+.

Install

  1. Extract yabadabadoo-0.1.zip to the root of the SD card.
  2. Put a Saturn BIOS (sega_101.bin or mpr-17933.bin) in the BIOS folder. A BIOS is required; without one the core shows a screen asking for it.
  3. Put your games in Roms/SATURN.

The core runs the device at 1700 MHz by default. See the README for how to change that, the known issues and how to build it yourself.
