Glide for Windows, the Windows counterpart of Glide for macOS: a keyboard-first scrolling window manager for Windows 11. Windows are columns on an endless horizontal strip that you glide through with the Win key, in the style of niri and PaperWM.

New in 0.6.0

  • App icons next to window titles in the overview and in tab bars.
  • Tab bars slide with their column instead of jumping ahead of it.
  • The overview scrolls when a strip is too long for the screen, instead of shrinking tiles until they're unreadable. The wheel scrolls the row under the pointer, and moving the selection keeps it in view.
  • Focus ring fix: after stacking or unstacking, the ring could appear where the window used to be. It now follows the window to where it lands.

Install

Download the installer for your PC and run it: x64 for most PCs, ARM64 for Snapdragon and other Arm PCs. It installs just for you, with no administrator rights, to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Glide. Then look for the Glide icon (your workspace number) in the notification area.

The installers aren't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time: choose More info › Run anyway. Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

What it does

  • Tiling: standard windows become columns on a scrolling strip. Columns can be ⅓, ½, ⅔ or full width, and can be stacked or tabbed. Dialogs, tool windows and fixed-size windows float. Off-screen columns wait as slivers at the screen edges.
  • Win-key shortcuts take over Snap, the taskbar and virtual desktops, the way FancyZones' "Override Windows Snap" does. Turn that off in Settings to give those combos back to Windows.
  • Nine workspaces, an on-screen display when you switch, and the workspace number in the tray.
  • Overview (Win+Tab): every workspace as rows of live window previews. Type to filter, arrows to pick, Enter to go.
  • Mouse: the horizontal wheel, or a thumb wheel like the MX Master's, glides along the strip. So does Win + the vertical wheel.
  • Settings: a shortcut recorder (any combo, Win combos included), gaps, the focus ring color, app rules (always float, always tile, width, workspace), start at sign-in, and restart as administrator.
  • Safety:
    • Turning tiling off (Win+Ctrl+Shift+T) or quitting puts every window back on screen.
    • A watchdog does the same if Glide crashes, then restarts it.
    • The layout comes back when you turn tiling on again.

Shortcuts follow key positions, so Win+[ is the key right of P on any layout. Settings shows each one with your keyboard's labels.

Known limitations

  • Three-finger swipes haven't been tried on every touchpad yet. Tell us if yours doesn't respond.
  • Windows of apps running as administrator aren't tiled unless Glide runs as administrator too (Settings › General).
  • No app icons yet in the overview and tab bars.
  • Tested on Windows 11 ARM64 (in a VM). The x64 build passed a smoke test under Arm's x64 emulation but hasn't run on x64 hardware yet.
  • The installers are large (58–61 MB), since .NET and the Windows App SDK are bundled.
