Release list
PurpleMonkey 0.11
PurpleMonkey 0.11
A small release of fixes after 0.10.
Fixed
- TALK: the big letter now always shows. About half the time (depending on the millisecond a key went down)
the letter was cleared in the moment it appeared, so the key spoke but showed nothing. - The Cat's right ear. Its resting picture was drawn a quarter turn off the other three, and the poses turned
it to compensate, so the ear lay over sideways whenever the face changed (singing a note, happy with keys held,
surprised, sleepy) and while dancing. The picture is now drawn the same way as the others and each face places
its ears itself.
For people animating the pets
- The Face editor of the pet animator (
tools/rig_editor/) has an x and a y for each ear in every face key, next
to its turn, and the firmware applies them: an ear's pictures were drawn one by one and do not all sit alike.
Installing over 0.10 needs nothing special: PurpleMonkey stores nothing.
PurpleMonkey 0.11 for the M-VAVE FM-1 (identity FM-1_927): a first instrument for a small child.
Try it in the browser, no FM-1 needed: https://quixotic7.github.io/PurpleMonkeyFM1/emu/
Install from the browser at https://quixotic7.github.io/PurpleMonkeyFM1/ (Chrome or Edge, the FM-1 connected by USB), or with the command-line installer: python3 tools/fm1_install.py purplemonkey-0.11.fwsc.
SHA256SUMS lists the package and the app. The package holds three JieLi AC79 SDK files (Apache-2.0); LICENSE, LICENSING.md and LICENSES.zip carry every licence. Installing firmware is at your own risk.

PurpleMonkey 0.10
PurpleMonkey 0.10
The first public release: a firmware that turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a first instrument for a small child. Press
any key and something nice happens. No menus, nothing to save, nothing to break.
What is in it
- SYNTH: every key is a note on a five-note scale over three octaves, so no key is a wrong note. The pet sings
a tapped note back a bar later, held keys grow a phrase, three quick keys start a run. - DRUMS: every key is a drum (nine sounds, three times over). A held key repeats in its sound's own rhythm.
- BEAT: a two-bar backing pattern per pet, with a bass and a round of four chords under SYNTH.
- TUNE: any key plays the next note of a nursery tune; twelve tunes, three a pet in each world.
- TALK: each key says its letter, A to Z, and shows it big; the last key says "yay". The voice is linear
predictive speech in the manner of the talking toys of 1978: 33 words in about 7 KB, no recording. - Four friends: Monkey, Cat, Dog and Llama, each with its own sound, drum kit, beat, chords and tunes. A new
pet says its name. - Sixteen sounds (four a pet) on FM6, a six-operator FM engine, and six worlds for the pet to stand in:
night, sea, balloons, space, meadow, snow. - Four knobs that cannot break the sound: TONE, WOBBLE, SPACE, LENGTH in SYNTH; SPEED, BUSY, BOUNCE, SQUISH in
DRUMS. HOME puts them back. - MIDI in (USB and TRS): a keyboard plays the pet's sound, channel 10 its kit. USB audio out to a computer.
- A browser emulator (the same firmware compiled to WebAssembly) and a browser installer.
Good to know
- This is a first beta. Installing firmware is at your own risk; read "Recovery" on the site first.
- Update mode is OCT− + OCT+ + HOME held for 5 seconds (three buttons, so a small hand does not find it).
- PurpleMonkey stores nothing. Installing it over Felucca or ChoralRoot replaces what they stored: the installer
saves a backup file first, to restore after you go back. - On a computer the FM-1 still shows ChoralRoot's USB names.
