Numlex 4.9.6
Numlex 4.9.6 adds saved window placement, a compact workspace, more notebook controls, automatic local-unit conversion, expanded weather queries, and drag-to-export for sheets.
What’s new
- Saved window placement: Numlex restores the main window’s saved frame when it still fits a connected display. Startup placement is deterministic and independent of currency-rate loading or clock timing.
- Minimal Mode: Choose View → Minimal Mode or press ⌘⇧M to temporarily hide the sidebar and Floating Total footer. It is reversible, applies to the focused window, and does not change the saved sidebar or footer preferences.
- Notebook controls: Settings → Notebook brings together sheet behavior and notebook preferences. Choose whether launch opens the last-edited sheet or creates a new one; set what ⌘N does; choose a regular-line or heading start for new sheets; sort sheets; and configure line numbers, the collapsed-sidebar button, and Floating Total visibility and contribution rules. The Floating Total can show Sum, Average, Count, or Median.
- Automatic local-unit conversion: Settings → Numbers → Auto-convert single units is off by default. When enabled, eligible standalone measurements are converted to local metric, US, or UK units for their answers and totals. It applies only to one numeric literal plus one built-in measurement unit and never rewrites the typed line; explicit conversions, arithmetic, currencies, and custom units keep their existing behavior.
- Five weather forms: Enter
weather in <place>or<place> temperaturefor the current temperature, high in <place>orlow in <place>for today’s high or low, andfeels like in <place>for the current apparent temperature. Results use Celsius. The place name is sent to Open-Meteo only for that explicit query; Numlex does not request location permission or use GPS. - Drag to export: Drag a sheet row from the sidebar to Finder or a Finder-backed Dock destination to create a portable
.nlxcopy. The original sheet stays in Numlex.
Compatibility and installation
Numlex 4.9.6 requires macOS 26 or later and Apple Silicon (arm64). The plain disk image contains only Numlex.app and an Applications shortcut; drag the app to Applications. Numlex is ad-hoc signed and not notarized. The first time you open it, Control-click (or right-click) Numlex.app, choose Open, and confirm the prompt.
Versions 4.8.0 and later can check for and install this update in the app. Versions 4.7.0 and earlier have no updater and must install 4.9.6 manually once.
Privacy and secure updates
Calculations and the five bundled offline catalogs run locally. Network use is limited to background currency-rate refreshes, weather/geocoding requests for places you explicitly type, and update checks or downloads. Numlex does not request GPS/location permission and sends no account identifiers or analytics; a weather lookup sends only the place name you typed. Anonymous system profiling is disabled.
In-app updates use Sparkle 2.9.6 and an HTTPS-only feed. EdDSA archive signatures are verified before extraction.
