@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 01 Oct 10:30

Updates install the newest release in one restart (0.7.26 and 0.7.27 were never published; their changes ship here), checks show as a pipeline, and device inspection and browser clients are complete.

  • Updating, fixed.
    • Before Restart, Tau checks for a newer release and downloads it first, so one restart always lands on the latest version.
    • The notice now says what is happening: preparing, downloading with a percentage, then installing. Tau reopens by itself afterwards.
    • Restart quits right away instead of waiting on background work.
    • The Mac app is about 120 MB smaller, so installing is faster.
  • Checks as a pipeline. Reviews → Checks shows a pull request's CI as connected circles, stage by stage. A running job's circle fills with how long it usually takes; hover for the times, click for the log. While checks run, the pull request chip in the thread header shows their progress.
  • Permissions. The permission card has the design's spacing. ⌘Enter allows when the composer is empty; Enter alone never does.
  • Devices. The device panel follows Tau's look:
    • devices as tabs;
    • controls under "View controls";
    • foldables that fold and rotate correctly;
    • H.264 streaming;
    • a floating viewer.
  • Browser clients pair and reconnect over a pinned connection, with credentials encrypted in the browser.
  • Linux. Capture of the foreground window on GNOME, KDE, Hyprland and Niri.
  • Account emails stay hidden until you click them.
  • Windows: the release builds again (Browser Connect assets now match on a CRLF checkout).
  • Smaller and faster to load. Kits load about 250 KB less code.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 01 Oct 01:09

The rest of the design lands: what an agent did reads as cards, the conversation folds into a narrow column beside the stage, reviews can resolve conflicts hunk by hunk, and the phone gets its own pages.

  • What a turn did, as cards. Open a finished turn and every step is one card:
    • a command shows its exit code and duration, and a failed one shows its output in a dark block;
    • an edit shows its diff inline;
    • reads are grouped ("Read 3 files").
  • Turns you can go back to. A line above each turn offers "Fork here" (it asks first) and "Restore files" to that turn's checkpoint. Tau's own notes ("A thread you started has finished") show as a quiet line, not as your message.
  • The conversation as a column. "Collapse conversation" folds it into a narrow column beside the stage: state and cost, what is running now, the turn's steps, and "Open conversation". A composer floats over the stage, so you can steer from there.
  • The thread's header keeps its title, model, turn and cost when the stage is open.
  • The composer shows how much context is used and how many messages are queued.
  • The stage shows files the agent opened as italic tabs, and "Agents N". The terminal is dark in the light theme too.
  • New thread: Run on and branch in one place.
    • A pill before the model ("MacBook Pro · tau/…") picks the machine and the branch in one popover, and in a sheet on the phone.
    • Name the branch yourself, or let Tau name it from the prompt.
    • "Based on" shows how fresh each base is.
  • Reviews.
    • "Commit only" commits a review's worktree without merging.
    • A conflicting merge shows each hunk: keep the thread's, main's, both, or edit by hand, then "Merge with my picks".
    • A note on a line stays under it with the thread's answer and a reply field.
  • Usage like the design.
    • Month, 30 days or all time, with cards for API spend, plans, threads and local tokens.
    • A daily chart, cost by provider and by project, and the most expensive thread.
    • Fixed: a project no longer appears once per worktree.
  • About and the first start.
    • Settings → About shows version, channel, machine and platform, with automatic updates, pre-release builds and licences in one place.
    • The welcome wizard has a new two-column layout.
  • Phone and tablet.
    • A search field heads the thread list, and a row's actions open in a sheet that names the thread.
    • Settings is a list of cards with their values.
    • A Machines page; when a machine goes offline, a banner shows when it was last seen and offers another machine.
    • Files shows Changed and All with a diff preview.
    • Reviews has notes on lines, "Keep for later" and "Send both".
    • Notifications can be set per event, with quiet hours; they apply to push too.
  • Faster to load. The app's code is split into fewer, shared files; about 9 KB less to load in total.

Extension API 1.39.0: tool rows with an icon, a note and a body, the turn-divider and spine regions, forkFrom, files the agent opened, panels in a phone row's actions, and a settings page's summary. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 22:52

Tau now looks and works like its design in many more places: search, errors, the first start, dialogs, evidence, "your turn", agents and questions, and drag and drop.

  • Search with ⌘K. "Search threads ⌘K" at the top of the sidebar opens one search for threads, files and commands:
    • tabs All, Threads, Files and Commands, or type #, / or > first;
    • Enter opens a result, ⌘Enter opens it on the stage;
    • threads on your other machines show up too.
  • Errors on the composer. A turn that stops shows a bar above the composer instead of a line in the chat:
    • a rejected key: Replace key and Switch model;
    • a rate limit: Retry;
    • a usage limit: when it resets, and Resume now.
    • Failed and offline threads are marked in the sidebar.
  • First start. With nothing open yet, Tau offers to open a folder or clone a repository, shows the shortcuts that matter, and lists your connected providers.
  • Dialogs. Every dialog has the same calm look: Cancel as text, the action as a pill, and delete in red.
  • Evidence. The pictures a turn took sit under its answer with Play and Save video. The viewer shows each picture with what the agent did around it, and "Attach to review" adds pictures to the pull request description. Evidence now also shows on the phone.
  • One dark lightbox. Every image opens in the same dark viewer with arrows, thumbnails and zoom. Esc closes it.
  • Your turn. When an agent needs you to sign in, an amber card sits on the composer:
    • the Preview gets an amber frame while you hold control;
    • a password field is never captured;
    • Done hands control back.
    • It works on the phone too.
  • Questions and permissions.
    • A question shows radio buttons, or checkboxes when you may pick several (now for the Agent SDK too).
    • Enter sends your answer. Enter never allows a permission.
    • A sub-agent's question now appears on its parent thread.
  • Agents tab. Agents are grouped as Running, Questions and Done, each with its model, cost and current tool.
    • Fixed: a sub-agent that worked longer than two minutes was wrongly marked as failed.
  • Drag and drop.
    • Drag a stage tab onto the stage to split it; Split right is in the tab's menu too.
    • Drag a thread onto another machine at the bottom of the sidebar to move it there.

Extension API 1.38.0: palette sources with a scope, splitStage, the host's name, sub-agent questions, a dialog icon, and thread-row states and drop targets for kits. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 21:54

One prompt can start on several runtimes at once, Tau controls simulators and devices, and menus, toasts and the project list look like the design.

  • Several runtimes at once. Start the same prompt on several runtimes, each in its own worktree, and compare the results.

  • Devices. Control local or SSH-connected simulators from Tau.

  • Connect. Desktop and phone reach your host through a relay pinned to that host's key.

  • Machines. Tau sets up SSH and WSL machines for you, keeps your Codex account across them, and GitHub operations can run through a paired host if you allow it.

  • Phone. Dictation, Live Activities and widgets.

  • Linux. Screen capture on Wayland goes through the system picker.

  • Toasts, one stack. Toasts sit at the bottom right and move up when the composer is in the way. "Thread finished", "needs an answer" and "needs approval" join the same stack, show the thread's name, and "Open" takes you there. (Turn them on in Settings → Notifications → "Show a toast instead".)

  • One thread menu. The menu under the thread title and the right-click menu on a thread show the same entries:

    • pin, settle, snooze, rename, copy and delete, with icons and shortcuts;
    • "Fork ›" holds the thread tree, Duplicate, "Continue in…" and "Bring back to parent";
    • "Move ›" holds Move up and Move down;
    • every entry is in the command palette too.
  • Right-click shows icons. The system menu on the Mac shows an icon beside each entry and the shortcut where there is one.

  • Project list like the design. Search at the top, then each project with its thread count and folder, plus "Open a project…" and "Manage projects". A long path is shortened in the middle, so the folder name stays.

  • Thinking levels. After a thread on a model without reasoning, a new thread's draft showed "no thinking levels" for every model. Each model shows its own levels again.

  • iPad. The usage bars sit at the bottom of the sidebar, as on the desktop; the "Threads" heading has room again.

Extension API 1.37.0:

  • registerThreadMenu sets the menu for a thread's title and its row.
  • Toasts can have the question type.
  • useContextMenu hands icons and shortcuts to the system menu.

See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 17:53

You can see what a thread is working on right now, threads show their cost before you open them in every runtime, and the phone reaches all your machines.

  • What it is doing right now. A running turn ends in one live row: "Thinking" with the turn's clock while the model thinks, then the tool it runs ("Running mkdir"), with a light shimmer over the words. With reduced motion the text stays still.
  • Toasts and menus.
    • A toast is one row again: icon, text, its action and ×, all aligned.
    • The Git menu next to "Up to date" opened invisibly; it shows again.
  • Costs without opening a thread. Threads of OpenCode, Cursor, Grok and Antigravity show their cost in the list, the hover card, Reviews and on the phone. Sessions you imported from Codex or the Agent SDK keep what they used.
  • Phone and iPad.
    • Search finds threads on all paired machines, not only the one you're on.
    • A thread on another machine that waits for your answer shows as "Question".
    • While another machine is busy, the app checks it every 30 seconds instead of every 2 minutes.
  • Your own kits.
    • A tutorial walks from tau kit new to a working kit: https://github.com/Rasalas/tau/blob/main/docs/kit-tutorial.md
    • tau kit new --name sets the display name; without it, pr-title becomes "PR Title".
    • Installing from the command line shows the same toast in the window as installing in the app.
    • A kit inside your project no longer leaves a changed file behind.
    • The thread's branch follows a git checkout you run outside Tau.
    • "Rebuild extension packages" in the palette rebuilds only your packages.
  • Building Tau yourself. A local build installs as "Tau Dev" beside Tau, with its own data, ports and no updates, so it never replaces the app you use.

Extension API 1.35.0: a thread list entry can say it waits for an answer. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 13:17

Reviews look and work like a real merge request, and work that is already in your branch stops asking to be merged.

  • A review page like on GitHub.
    • All changes at once: every file's diff sits below the next, each collapsible, with "Open in editor". The file list on the left jumps to a file.
    • Its own sidebar: an open review shows its files, the thread's turns (or a pull request's commits) and your notes. "‹ All reviews" and Esc or ⌘[ take you back to the same row.
    • Local and remote alike: thread reviews and pull requests from GitHub share this page, with Changes, Turns or Timeline, and Checks.
    • Notes on lines: notes collect in the sidebar and go to the thread as one turn, or to the pull request as one review.
  • A clearer list. Ready to merge, Changes requested and Conflicts show as one table with changes, checks, model, cost and age; the row's action sits at its end. Arrow keys and Enter move through it. Remote pull requests use the same table.
  • Already merged is merged. A branch whose changes are already in the target, through a squash, a cherry-pick, a rebase or rewritten history, moves to Merged with "Already in main", and one click removes its worktree and branch. Every row names the branch it would merge into.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 09:56

Push notifications work without keys of your own, end-to-end encrypted, and Reviews show pull requests the way GitHub does.

  • Push without setup.
    • Tau's relay: a machine without Apple or Google keys of its own now sends notifications through Tau's small relay. Your phone makes a key for each paired machine, and the machine encrypts every notification with it; the relay, Apple and Google see only ciphertext.
    • Android shows the decrypted title and text. iPhone shows "A thread needs your attention" for now; a tap opens the thread.
    • Your own keys still work: with them, your machine sends to Apple and Google directly. Settings → Push shows which route each platform takes.
  • Reviews.
    • Pull request descriptions and comments render GitHub's HTML: collapsible release notes, quotes, lists and links. Anything unsafe is removed.
    • A pull request's state shows as an icon, with its name in the tooltip.
    • The merge dialog keeps a long branch name on one line.

Extension API 1.33.0: a kit can render raw HTML in Markdown through its own sanitizer. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

The privacy policy at https://tbuck.de/privacy/tau/ describes the relay.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 07:33

Codex runs on your ChatGPT plan without installing anything, and a new thread gets its own worktree when another one is already working in the project.

  • Codex with your ChatGPT plan.
    • Continue with ChatGPT: Settings → Providers signs a Codex instance in with your ChatGPT plan. Each instance stays tied to its account, and signing out revokes the sign-in.
    • No install needed: Tau downloads a verified Codex release by itself when an instance needs one, shows its progress, and keeps it current with Tau's releases. Your own Codex CLI and its login keep working.
    • Usage: the active account, the plan and "Manage usage" show in Settings, the composer and Usage.
  • Its own worktree when the project is busy. When another thread is working in the same folder, a new thread's draft offers "Start in its own worktree", switched on. Both threads' changes then stay separate and are recorded. If you stay in the same folder, the notice about unrecorded changes says how to avoid it.
  • Privacy policy. Tau's privacy policy now lives at https://tbuck.de/privacy/tau/, in English and German.
  • Fixes.
    • A Tau you built yourself updates to the next release.
    • Devices paired read only no longer see sign-in activity.

Extension API 1.32.0: process locks for kits, and runtimes can control which sign-in methods show. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

v0.7.17

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 30 Sep 00:38

0.7.16 was tagged, but its phone builds failed before release; 0.7.17 is that release, with the fixes. Agent tools stay up to date, new models show up without waiting for a Tau release, and the phone app comes to Google Play.

  • Agent tools stay current.
    • Keep up to date: Settings → Runtimes has a new "Agent tools" section. Tau knows how Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and OpenCode are installed (npm, Homebrew or their own installer), keeps them up to date when you allow it, and only updates while no agent of that tool is working.
    • When Homebrew lags: if Homebrew hasn't caught up with npm yet, Tau says so and offers to switch.
    • Model lists follow: a runtime's model list refreshes as soon as its program changes. A Refresh button sits in the model picker and in Settings.
  • New models without a release. Tau reads a signed model catalog from its website and adds new models, their context and prices to Pi. The first one is GPT-6.1 Sol.
  • The phone app.
    • Google Play: Tau for Android is in Google Play's internal testing.
    • Demo: an offline demo shows the app without a paired computer.
    • Store builds: iOS builds go to TestFlight with every release.
  • Fixes.
    • Tool activity sits in the right place around replies again.
    • Settle and Snooze are back on a thread row's hover.
    • Sidebar extensions stay when you switch workspaces.
    • Default branches show in the branch menu.
    • A host adopted from an earlier start recovers cleanly.
    • Redundant runtime icons are gone.
    • Text sizes on the desktop are adjusted.
  • Under the hood. Releases take about half as long, the start-up bundle has room again, and the repository's root is tidier.

Extension API 1.31.0: runtimes can name their program and keep it current, and tau/host-extension exports the CLI install helpers. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.

@tau-releases-rasalas tau-releases-rasalas released this 29 Sep 21:27

Your phone sees every machine, threads show their cost before you open them, and writing a kit of your own no longer needs insider knowledge.

  • Every machine on the phone.
    • One list: the thread list shows the threads of every machine the phone is paired with, each row naming its machine. A tap opens the thread where it runs.
    • New thread: "Run on" in a new thread picks the machine, and the draft goes along.
    • Unreachable machines show a notice with Retry, and their threads stay greyed out until they're back.
    • Juicebars head the thread list: what is left of your plans, the same account once across machines. Choose which with "Show in thread list" on the Usage page.
  • Cost without opening. Claude Code and Codex threads show their cost and tokens in the thread list, the hover card and Reviews without being opened first.
  • Kits of your own.
    • tau kit new <name> writes a working package, types included.
    • Untrusted projects: a package in a project Pi doesn't trust shows up as skipped, with a button to trust the project.
    • Build errors arrive whole: file, line and the source line, in the toast, the Inspector and the new "Develop a package" view in Settings → Packages.
    • A kit whose host half is down disables its commands and says why.
    • For kit authors: a thread's branch and pull request are available to every kit.

Extension API 1.30.0: a region at the head of the thread list, thread-list sources, host availability and unavailable commands, project trust and package builds, the thread branch and pull request services, and usage in a runtime's thread listing. See docs/EXTENSIONS.md.
