Guide: System Performance

General

  • Use Linux as Windows' included drivers are usually the root cause of less performance.
    • Use beginner-friendly distros if unfamiliar.

Linux

  • Use Feral GameMode. Alternatives (e.g. Ananicy) are unable to tune Java without causing issues.

Java

  • Use the latest Java version as it has the latest bug fixes and arguments. If you play on an older version that doesn't support it, fall back to the nearest LTS, then the LTS before that. (e.g. OpenJDK 27 -> OpenJDK 25 -> OpenJDK 21)
    • On versions before 1.13, use Java 8 (e.g. OpenJDK 8) unless when playing on configurations that support it (e.g. Cleanroom).
  • Use Shenandoah GC (generational mode) as it is suitable for most cases. Use ZGC for a more performant but less efficient garbage collector or G1GC for a more efficient but less performant garbage collector.
  • Use sane arguments for more performance. Do not use random arguments without researching each one of them! Refer to this for more info.
