What's new
Sklad 0.2.3 is a storage-reliability and recovery release. It focuses on keeping existing local data accessible and preventing damaged files or incomplete vault settings from being silently replaced.
- Added an explicit recovery screen for invalid or unreadable
sklad.jsonandsettings.jsonfiles. Normal editing and automatic backups pause until the storage issue is resolved. - Added recovery for missing, disabled, incomplete, or mismatched vault settings when recoverable metadata is available in the encrypted library or backup. The existing master password is still required to decrypt secrets.
- Made new encrypted libraries and backups self-contained with versioned vault recovery metadata.
- Preserved source files before migration, reset, or destructive recovery actions, and kept data writes atomic.
- Added safe handling for encrypted backups created by
0.2.2: Sklad verifies the matching unlocked vault or master password before restoring them or changing active files.
The application identifier and data-directory location have not changed. No analytics, telemetry, update checks, or other external requests were added to the desktop application.
Before upgrading from 0.2.2
Important
Fully quit Sklad using Quit in the tray menu before copying files or installing the update. Closing the main window leaves Sklad running in the tray.
As an extra precaution, open the data location shown in Sklad settings and copy both sklad.json and settings.json to a separate safe folder. Keep them together as one matching snapshot. Copying the entire data folder also preserves existing backups.
Keep this snapshot private: ordinary snippets are stored as plaintext. Secret snippet values remain encrypted.
Sklad 0.2.3 reads existing 0.2.2 data from the same location. If the library contains encrypted snippets, it is converted atomically to a versioned format with recovery metadata. Before that conversion, Sklad automatically saves the exact original library beside it as:
sklad.pre_metadata_migration_<timestamp>.json
This automatic file contains the pre-upgrade sklad.json only. It does not include settings.json or changes made after the upgrade, so the separate two-file snapshot is still recommended.

Downgrading to 0.2.2
Warning
Sklad 0.2.2 cannot read the new format of a converted encrypted library or encrypted backups created by 0.2.3. It may show an empty library, and saving from 0.2.2 can overwrite the active file.
To return to 0.2.2 safely:
- Fully quit Sklad through the tray menu.
- Copy the current 0.2.3 data folder somewhere safe so that later changes are not lost permanently.
- Install 0.2.2 without launching it. If it starts automatically, fully quit it before restoring files. Do not choose an uninstall option that removes application data.
- Restore both
sklad.jsonandsettings.jsonfrom the matching snapshot made before the upgrade. - Start 0.2.2 and verify the library and vault using the master password from that snapshot.
The restored library reflects the snapshot date. Changes made later in 0.2.3 remain only in the separate copy made in step 2.
If the manual pre-upgrade sklad.json copy is unavailable, a copy of sklad.pre_metadata_migration_<timestamp>.json can be restored under the name sklad.json while Sklad is fully closed. It still requires the matching original settings.json. Do not use current settings if the vault was reset or its password was changed after migration.
When restoring an encrypted 0.2.2 backup inside Sklad 0.2.3, unlock the matching vault first or enter its master password on the recovery screen. An incorrect password or a backup belonging to another vault stops the restore before active files are changed.
